Installing a larger engine in a 230S
As I mentioned in another post, we are driving a 1966 230S on a 3500 mile family trip. The car is wonderful, but the engine is old and tired and slow.
I got offered a W114 250C engine that is supposed to be a European spec 2.8 liter SOHC engine, in good shape for $600. Does anyone know much about this engine? It appears that this would be a bolt in swap and not look any different than my engine. I am wondering about the little things like; can I keep my newly rebuilt carbs (with some jetting changes), does this engine still use the same starter, exhaust manifold, fuel pump etc. The car the engine is coming out of has a manual transmission. Should I get the transmission too, or will this engine bolt right up to my transmission? Thanks for any help on this. |

Get it all. It 'should be' a bolt in operation. The exhaust pipes may not bolt up to the existing manifolds. Check them, they may need new headpipes.

I was just reading the post about your rally finny! I'm in the process of putting a 1970 W114 250C (2.5 Liter, M130) engine in my 61 4 speed colum shift 220S (original M127 engine). So far everything bolts up (The Manul flywheel bolts for that year were a headache to find but just go with MB Dealership.)
i have a few things to fix before i put the engine in but she's coming along.. I'm doing all the work myself as a project but i can't wait.. it's torture! |

Thanks fort the help. Its always nice to hear from someone who has done the swap. So many times you are already in to deep to realize it was a bad idea and you forge ahead.
On the other hand, has anyone done any low-cost hop ups on the original engine and gotten any usable power? Without spending a whole bunch of time and money, I don't see how to make much out of a 2.3 liter engine in this big of a car. |

I'm working on a '64 220Sb with a '67 250S engine. The carbs presented many problems but I finally have it dialed in. Since this engine is kind of old and tired, I imagine it's probably about as strong as the 220 was when it was new.

Usually the best thing is what's called a 'Stage 0' modification: make sure everything in the basic engine is working properly. Ignition and cam timing, compression, etc. You can also play a bit with ignition timing to see if it helps. One thing that will help any car is ducting cold air to the intake. Most of these cars suck the hot air that has already passed through the radiator. Making a duct to get 'cool' outside air to the air cleaner can give a few 'free' horsepower and will also make the engine less likely to ping. It kind of bothers me that on my 4.5 there is not an easy way of doing this. Csaba 72 280SEL 4.5 |

If you want to get really interesting, I have a Euro d-jet 4.5 sitting in my shop that I'm planing on getting rid of. It came from a 74 slc. The same engine went into the w108/w109 and its smaller sibling went into the w111 coupes and cabrios.

Al,
Out of curiosity, does the Euro 4.5 have higher compression? The Nitske book says the Euro cars had 8.8:1 CR, but I have found many inaccuracies in that book, so who knows... Csaba |

As far as I know, it's 8.8:1, which is the same as a Euro 500 motor. Your motor has 8.0:1 and makes about 30hp less.
