M130 crankshaft noise
 

Just came back from the mechanic for the engine noise I've been trying to diagnose with the help from the forum.

The mechanic said it is the crankshaft bearings
Engine needs to come off crankshaft machined and new bearings installed
In any case not what I want to hear
Around 2000 bucks if he does the crankshaft only
The other option is another engine but good luck finding one

What do you think,
Is it worth to fix this problem or maybe rebuild the whole engine and the price goes up significantly

How are your oil pressure readings?

i don't think it's good Mike.
on idle hot it sits at 15
once i accelerate it goes up

what should it be at?

15 psi isn't "bad". It's not great but certainly within acceptable range. My '74 M110 with a gadzillion miles idles at about 15 psi and pegs upon acceleration. It stays pegged at anything above 2K or so. My M115 does the same.

Do a bit more investigating before you pull the trigger on that crank job. I'm not ruling out the possibility but those M130's lower ends were pretty bullet proof.

Before I'd spend the $2K the mechanic is wanting for just doing the crank I'd drop a used engine in it. The $2K is not an exorbitant amount considering the labor involved.

You could send to Metric Motors for less and they are the best.

The deal breaker for me would be the cost of their shortblock at $5100 plus $1100 core. Rebuilt M130 Engines although I guess their cranks are more reasonable... Rebuilt M130 Cranks

what is the best place to order parts for this engine?

i am also considering removing the engine myself and opening up.
if i take the engine out i might as well do more work then just the crankshaft.

used engines are hard to find in canada and i don't know if it will be better than mine.

And there is where the trouble begins. "Hmm, let's see, might as well re-ring it, the valves could do with a freshen-up, those carbs still are not quite right, I can see/get to the engine compartment easy so it'd be a good time to clean, repaint and fix that scraggly wiring, so THAT'S where that hose/wire/linkage goes, is that a spot of rust might as well replace those mounts, those sub-frame mounts look a bit faded, no sense in putting those old hoses and belts back on,....":D

Dan Caron (Benz Dr. on this board) is in Sarnia, Ont. and has a). expertise and perhaps b). parts/ ideas on sourcing a Canadian motor. You might reach out to him.

Drop the small oil pan and see what you find in there and in the oil pump screen.
You also can remove one or two bearings for closer inspection.

How does he know it is the crankshaft? What are the symtoms? Sorry-I may not have seen the other posts. The crankshaft bearings should last forever unless damaged by lack of lubrication or maintenance. If it is a spun bearing the block will need to be align bored. I guess any internal engine noise will require a teardown unless it is the top end.

and here is when driving, you will notice when i press the gas metalic pinging happen (the best I can describe) and it is extremely noticable.

When I took the car to the mechanic (who is considered specialist in these cars) i revved it few times and he "knew" exactly what it is. Said it is the crankshaft bearings.

I have put new cables, new spark plugs, set the valves and timing as per specs. No issue with the power, starting or accelerating except the noise.

Well, I hate to say it but judging by the oil pressure fluctuation I gotta agree (partially) with your mechanic. At anything over 2K rpm the gauge should remain pegged. It's definitely a bearing problem. I'd guess rod bearing instead of crank bearings but the end result is the same. The crank needs to be machined.

Hard cheese old man. I'd take JMela's advice and hook up with the Benz Dr. He can probably line you up with an engine.

At the end of the day it needs to be fixed. The rest of the car is mint.
And yes my dash is cracked just doesn't show on that video
I did have 74 w115 with perfect dash though, so they do exist
