Brake light problems, 220s

The brake lights are giving me troubles again. I got one of them to work reliably when I replaced the switch. The other brake light would work if you hit the tail light assembly. I had bigger problems and had to replace much of the brake system. Now there are no brake lights.
Is this a chronic problem because of the tail light assembly (there is always water in there.) Or did I botch it?

Any ideas? The car is a 220S, if that makes a difference.
Thanks
