I own a 72' Mercedes 280 SEL 4.5, the body is perfect with only 2 really small spots of rust on the fenders. The interior needs to be redone, and the engine needs work possibly a rebuild but not sure getting ready to put it in the shop to get tested to see. I would really like to know if anyone has a blue book or where to find prices for this car. I have been looking everywhere for it and cannot find anything. Thanks for the help in advance!

To be honest with you, there are so many of this particular model around, it's really hard to say what yours would be worth. Basically, as the old saying goes, it's worth what somebody will pay you for it Sorry I couldn't offer good advice here, but you'll need to determine that once you figure out the engine situation.

I see you're fairly local to me; I'm near Allentown. Check out the Morning Call (allentown paper) www.mcall.com ... they had a couple 108's in there. One was $900 and the other was around $1800 if I recall. Pretty low prices.

I just bought a '72 280SEL 4.5. I used Traderonline.com as a guide, where you will see a variety of prices. My guess is that it's value is as a parts car, since a restoration would end up in much more money in the car that it could ever be sold for. Robert Roe's price advice seems the most acurrate to me. To get more, you would probably have to wait a long time for just the right person to come along. Something like "this is the exact model and color and options that my dear old granddad used to teach me to drive and then I took to the Senior Ball and proposed to my wife in! Oh I just have to have this car, I'll pay anything!"

We would all love a buyer like that and to see these cars continue in service! May I suggest you post it on the Swap Shop BB here? I have not looked there yet, so you might have already done this!

Good luck!

I am looking for a 280SEL model myself. Being a 4.5 yours might command a slighlty higher price than a straight 6 model, but not if you think it needs rebuilt. From what you have described it sounds like yours is worth 2K. A poor interior is one thing, but a engine needing rebuilt and a interior in need of fixing up will cost you or the next owner more than it is presently worth. I myself would steer clear of this car unless you think it might cost less than 3K to fix up. In VG condition this model can be worth 10K depending on mileage. If you do plan on selling it i may be interested.
