W123 Newbie a/c question

Hello guys,

Got a lead on a '79 300cd w/ 80k miles. The seller is asking $3,250. However, the a/c doesn't work. Turns out this model has a really wacked out complicated a/c system. I remember as a kid, these cars having a/c problems. Now I know why.

Can you easily & cheaply convert the automatic climate system to a manual system? Anyone in Europe sell a kit perhaps? I would think the euro market would have plenty of spare parts to convert it.

Stuart

easily done but not cheaply done - electronic servo upgrade kit, sanden compresor upgrade, clean, flush, charge

cheaply done but not eaisily done - gut a manual system from a 240d or a euro car and, gut ACCII system from your car, Swap

York AC compresors are pretty much bulletproof. not ideal but works fine and replacements can be had fo <$200.

The pushbutton controls, the vac pods and the other ACCII components other than the "servo" are fairly robust as well

But remember with the electronic kit, it will not operate the fresh air flap....meaning always recirculated cabin air...

Fairly easy to fix, but if your not lucky can be very expensive to just get the acc part going...

Yes and no, you need more then just the dials. You need the whole heating box, all controls and the mono valve with the related hoses from under the hood. It requires removal of the entire dash to install also.

I've removed numerous dashes over the years. Heck, the car needs a new dash, if they are still available. What a great time to replace the entire hvac system. I would need to locate an entire 240d from the junkyard, buy it, transport it, then transplant the pieces. Suddenly, fixing the old system seems like a better idea. That ACII system seems pretty good in comparison.

240D airbox

Stu.

I just bought a w123 240D that I'm parting out. The entire airbox, manual heat controls, dials, etc. are available. Shoot me a PM if you are interested. I'm in the mist of converting the ACC in a 1984 300D to a maunal system.
