Old Gearbox need help
 

Hi, can anybody help, I have got an 1987 hymer with a 5 cyl none turbo derv engine but had a after market turbo and intercooler fitted, it has a 4 speed automatic box and this is where my problems are, it is full vaccum system with no cables or rods, there is a number on the flange just above the sump it is 6012705101720 11002 019716 this is the only number I can find but means nothing to me, there is a 4 pin block connected where the gear selected shaft comes out and single push on connecter just above it, it is leaking fluid from the single one, does anyone know what it is called and how to remove it so I can replace it, it also will not go into first gear by the stick but will set of in first and will go in when down shifting, but when I looked at the leak I can see a large rubber thing stopping it but it has a adjuster on it so may be able to sort that bit, but can any one give me advice on the leak and does any one know were I can get a diagram of the gear box to help in the future. thanks Dave

hi, been given a brake down of how too work the number out, and it seems that my gearbox is a: 720-110 w 4 a 018, any info or diagrams on how to fix this leak would be very much appreciated thanks dave

Dave you are better off saying it is a 720-110

I think this was used in pagodas or something really close to it.

But may be there's a manual on one of the W113 sites. It was probably also used on other pre-1970 vehicles. There's a place in australia that advertises this type of transmission as a speciality =>

Hi stetch, yes I think Australia is a bit to far, but if I get no look in need couple of days I will email them for advise, they can only say yes or no, and yes that's the box I have just a couple of bolt on parts are different, but they would of used this box for allsorts, once again thank you dave

Saw a lot of Merc camper type vehicles on my cross country drive. Looked like modified Sprinter vans with Bluetec. Seems a whole lot more maneuverable and efficient than the giant rolling houses that some people drive around.

HYMER DAVE & Stretch:

The first part of the number sequence can be read as: 601 270 51 01.
That is a MB part no. associated with either chassis type 601, or with engine type 601. (I think probably with engine type 601)

The second part of the number sequence, 720 110 is associated with the transmission type. From the appearance of the bell housing in the picture posted by Stretch it would contain a Fluid Clutch rather than a torque convertor. A Fluid Clutch would be consistent with a K4A trans type, which is the type used in the 113 chassis. If there was a version of that trans that was equipped with a torque convertor, then it would indeed be designated a W4A.

If the trans in the Hymer matches the one in the photo posted by Stretch, then it is of a later series of transmissions and would be designated W4B xxx. The numbers in the xxx location refer to the torque capacity of the of the trans. Example: W4B 025 (used with OM615/616/617).

The earlier trans, K4A, which was used in the 113 chassis, has a large three position solenoid mounted on top of the trans case just aft of the bell housing.

HD: Pics of the right side of the trans will help to identify.

The 720.110 transmission was used in the T1 vans (209D/309D/409D), also known as the Bremen Transporter. The Hymer was probably built on the T1 chassis, so it is not strange that the 720.110 transmission is installed. It is not an old one.

Hi all, well we are getting somewhere, yes I do believe its a w4a as I can see the what looks like a torque converter looking in the fins on the bell housing, went looking in all paper work I got with it years ago and it is built on a t1 409d chassis number starts with 611, went to my local merc dealer when they opened today but they only do cars now, but told me of a place to send photos to and they are going to get back to me tomorrow, tried one of them on line ask an expert, who said it my reversing(back-up) light senor but if plugged in or no lights work ok, waste of £27, right as promised going to try and put some photos of my beauty, if it fails my lad said he will help me tomorrow, dave

OOOPPPSSS, yes we forgot to change the number plate on the pop-up from the car to the hymer, and I must admit I never up loaded the photos my lad came in as I was trying, dave.

I think the leaking part is 92 and 95, but I'm not entirely sure:

You might just need to replace #95, the seal ring.
