Need to rebuild M130 6 cylinder

My engine finally gave up the ghost with a broken ring, leaving a massive smoke trail in its wake. While it is nice to not have tailgaters anymore, I obviously can't go anywhere until I get it fixed.

I'm planning to replace the rings and hone the cylinders if there isn't a whole lot of wear on the cylinders, otherwise I'll need a new set of pistons. I saw a set on fastlane for $700, or individually for $152 at Adsit.

So the obvious question is where is the best source for these engine parts?

FWIW, the machine shop guy told me that with Sealed Power rings, they almost never hone.

If you do need pistons, you are 'way better off financially with a good used engine.

You can get a rebuilt short block from metric motors for about 2,500$ if I recall (maybe 3k). You can get a good used engine for about 500$. You'll find metric will sell you the pistons more inexpensively than just about anybody. That fastlane price looks about on par with Metric though. Considering all the other stuff you need to do a rebuild, one stop shopping doesn't hurt.

I'm really interested in either performing the overhaul myself with the assistance of my father who has overhauled or participated in the overhaul of machinery ranging from cars, Harleys, tractors, and aircraft engines. So if I can get the parts, then I could definitely get the job done. I'm hoping to be able to just rebore the block and leave the heads alone. They should still be in good shape.

I would be interested in more information on Metric Motors. I've not heard about them, but is that $2500 for drop in overhauled motor, or just the rebuilt block?

The reason I'm willing to put the money into the overhaul is that I just had the car painted last summer and now have it looking pretty damn good. This 108 has all the nice features I like, such as a new air conditioner, new stereo, and the really easy to start fuel injection unlike my dad's carburated 280S which needs a little nudging to get started. This machine is a daily driver, and I don't have much choice other than to fix it up. Unfortunately, I've been building myself a practically new benz one piece at a time. But with my utter disdain for light weight, egg shaped, new cars that ride like a skateboard and crush like a beer can when they hit something, I really can't stand anything other than an old 108 chassis. So I'm digging myself deeper into a car that I can't stand to get rid of, but once I've rebuilt everything it'll be like a new one, and I'll have all the knowledge to rebuild a 280SL from scratch some day when I graduate from college, get a good engineering job, and have a middle class lifestyle. Well, thanks for listenning to my rant, but seriously, a phone number for this Metric Motors might help.

As of tomorrow, I'm going to attach the thing with my digital camera and a ratchet and start removing accessories. I should have it out within a week and can start looking at whether the cylinders have any chance of just being rehoned, or will need a rebore.

That was a shortblock price. Rebuilt block fitted with pistons. No head. -CTH

Curious about your diagnosis of broken ring

Did you run a compression test?
Did you do a draw down test (with draw down gauges)?
Could you have blown a head gasket?

Metric Motors

Tell your dad that my 280s' starting has been much improved with the pertronix ignitor system with their hotter coil.

The m130 botom end is durable. I would check valve guids and compression test and leak down first.

Where? I have been looking for a couple of years. I have not found a good M130 at any price. Only runner I have seen was advertised for $2000, but it needed a valve job, so was not what I would call good.

If anyone has a good M130 they are selling for $500 I would like to talk to them.

hmm, somebody woke up an old thread. Interesting.

Yes, back in 2005, the M130 parts cars where handy. Now, they are few and far between, but they're around. Like somebody else already said, the bottom end is tough and dependable, so you might get away with a re-ring, valve job and head gasket.

Having said that, If you don't want to keep the car original, M103 parts cars are plentiful and megasquirt fuel injection is the current fashionable toy to play with.
