How to I attach my hood star? 1970 /8

So I'd like to attachment my hood star on my 1970 220D. I suspect I'm missing something though. This is what I have.

Dave,

If you look at the underside of the assembly there's a slot (visible in the pic) that a sliding plate goes into to lock it in place.

You're missing the spring/tab thingy that engages the slots in the bottom of the star pediment that you have.

It is essentially a curved piece of flat spring steel that has a keyhole slot in it that the bottom of the pediment drops through, the you slide it over to one side, locking in the star pediment.

I am looking at some junker 114s, will see if I can snag one for you. I just took the star off a 108 going to be junked, but I think I tossed the spring thingy.

115 994 01 21 is the part number. 410 in this image.

Thanks Palolo and Tomguy! I managed to find my missing one in my little pile of parts. It certainly helped to know what I was looking for!

This was it pre-star. I still have to get the grill and hood to sit nice.

The paint is far from perfect but I really like the car. Actually the whole isn't perfect but I drive it daily.

There are two adjuster/bumper stops on the fender front supports which are used to adjust the height and remove the "bounce" from the hood. The rubber tips on these are usually gone on the older cars.They are available from dealers and most import places.

Well my car came with the later but incorrect plastic grill. I swapped it for the correct grill and it hasn't sat right since. I can't see why but obviously there is a reason.

Way back in the cobwebs of my mind are two "facts" about W114/W115* grilles.

1. Size of the hole for the hood star varies, it was changed fairly early on.

2. Metal grille was ONLY issued for the W115 cars, and eventually discontinued and replaced by plastic grille. The W114 models had plastic inserts from beginning of production.

*W114 series comprised the six cylinder cars, W115 series included 4 and 5 cylinder cars. Only real difference was the spot weld count, it was greater on the W115 body. And the chrome window trim. W115 only has it on the B pillar, W114 has it surrounding the window on the door openings.

Thanks for the info. These are the two grills I have. Just looking at them they seem to be the same dimensions but hard to eye ball it. I'm going to put the plastic one back on this weekend and see if that resolves it. I like the metal one a bit better but if the hood fits nicer then the plastic one might be the way to go.

The one on the left in the picture appears to be the '73 and earlier grill. The the other appears to be the '74 -up grill. Might just be the angle of the picture though.

Haha - good to see another Alberta man Slog Dog.

PARSHOOT1 - I bought this one off a friend of mine. Actually I bought two and make one driver from them.

Mike D - They are both the same size and early grills. The picture just makes them look different.

So I took the grill off and the hood seems to sit too high still. So it isn;t the grill. I think it is the plunger thing on the hood latch pushing up too hard.
