1956 180

I recently purchased a 1956 180 Mercedes Benz. It hadn't been started for about 25 years. I got it running and cleaned up. The next issues to deal with are some electrical ones. The left turn signal is on and I don't know where the on and off switch is on the dashboard. I ordered a workshop manual for it but have not received it yet. Does anyone know where and what the switch looks like?

How about some pics.

You need to join our ponton group. We've got over 900 owners with lots expertise. Go to Mercedes-Benz Pontons (1953-1962) © www.mbzponton.org and look for IPOG mailing list.

On your car, if the turn signal is really blinking, then the chrome center ring of the steering wheel is the switch. It moves a little clockwise for the right signal and counter clockwise for the left one. If the light is on steady, then you probably have the side marker light on and that is turned off by the headlight switch.

Where is the best place to purchase a rebuilt or new carburetor for my 180 1956 Mercedes Benz? I did look at the ponton website but didn't see anything. I just cleaned out and put a ceramic coating in gas tank. I should have done that first. The current carb just won't start. I looked at the ponton site a couple of months ago. I will look there again as well.

If your carb is like the one on my '61 180, it's a simple Solex 1-barrel. Most of the jets/jet-holders on the Solex can be unscrewed from the outside to clean or poke-through any dirt or clog.

Thanks for the tip.

I should've asked - are you sure fuel is getting to the carburetor? On my '61 180, there's a fuel-filter down below the driver's side heater-box, on the inner fender. Otherwise, crud in the fuel-system could also disable the fuel pump.

Thanks, My problem definitely was crud. Waiting for warmer weather to continue working on it.
