Install AC on W115, possible?
Hello all,
I'm restoring an W115 1975 240d 3.0 (300d), and since I'm doing the complete restor, sand blasting etc, and I'm almost ready for the paint, I'm trying to decide on some modifications, since I will be using the car as a daily drive, and the AC is a want MOD! Till today I couldn' understand if the W115 had AC or not, I only saw pictures of W114 with it, but since the share the same parts, I already know that I will need a center console, but the rest is what I want to know if you can help me guys? parts list: -center console -fan blower -AC compressor -AC radiator -outside radiator fan -tubbing ... Thanks for any help. |

Was thinking of doing this myself.
Talked to a guy here named Kraakevik (had a ton of spare parts/advice). Not sure how to post threads, but if you look through my posts I asked a lot of these same questions (go to my profile, then preview all my posts- you should see it)

I imagine you could do it if you got all the parts, off the top of my head I know you'll need
-compressor -condenser -evaporator -low/high pressure lines -receiver/dryer -thermal expansion valve -appropriate controls not sure if there are any other specific parts needed or not

Yes they did as mine does. The parts list that people have named is pretty complete. I would look at a U-pullit type wrecking yard to source some of the parts at a steal. I have a 75 300d and I found a nearly complete 76 300d at a pull-it type wrecking yard and got a complete instrument cluster, all of the vacuum pots for the HVAC and doors, relays under the hood and a bunch of other misc "ankle bitter" bits like plastic vac line. all of that for $80.00. I don't know where I could find that for that price!!! best of luck and when that York compressor is functioning properly the A/C will blow at about 35 deg F..you will have to turn the temp up!!

Thank you guys for the replys
I think that for me the biggest problem will be finding a middle console and the fan blower for the AC! In Europe all the cars didn't had AC, at least for the ones I saw on sale on the internet and on parts, there was very few with AC! Mechanical AC parts I can get from the W123, theres not the problem. PS: one question, on the inside, how will the fan blower and heat exchanger will work? separated circuits and independet functions or what? Thanks |

I think, and that's where it gets dangerous, that the W114/W115 had the A/C installed portside. They came with York compressors, and crude engine mount brackets.
Early ones had a manual switchover lever, later ones used vacuum. I've got a complete system in the garage somewhere, removed it to save as a spare when I was driving 220Ds.... Jim

I think we've all noted by now that the OP is in Europe, and as a consequence a side-by-side swap of parts is effectively out of the question.
Most cars destined for US delivery had all the air handling components installed during build (heater core, evaporator, fans, air doors, vacuum servos, expansion valve, etc.). MBNA installed the compressor, condenser, drier/receiver and hoses. If someone in the US were to supply everything aft of the firewall, it would be a big step for the OP. |
