W108 - Groan from steering box
A new noise popped up just recently... A groan (with accompanying slight vibration) from the steering box when turning the steering wheel slightly to the right, from center.
Doesn't happen when turning it left, nor at extreme L or R lock, just the initial rightward 1/8 to 1/4 of a turn. For example, when leaving a curbside parking stall, the wheel turns to the left to get the front of the car out, then the wheel goes right to go down the road. Just that slight rightward steering brings out the groan. Anyone else have this? The rest of the travel is good, and full lock on either side is normal. Fluid is topped up, color is good, etc. Will use the wife's turkey baster to suck it all out though and do a full fluid change with lock-to-lock turns. Sould be able to get it cleaned before Thanksgiving.

Check the frame rail where the steering gear box mounts.

My steering box started groaning when I put LUCAS stop leak steering box oil into the reservoir because the pump leaked. Then it got worse and I ended up only having power steering when turning right and not left. Try bleeding the system. I gave up and replaced my leaking pump since the Lucas solution wasn't a solution...

second the suggestion of checking the bolts that go through the frame to mount the box to the frame. These have a habit of breaking around that area and need welding. can get dangerous if not repaired
also check the return low pressure hose. if it is sweating it may be allowing the box to suck air. replace with correct hose, bleed out the box thoroughly. |

New hoses are probably in order, anyway. And a bloody good bleeding of the bleedin' system, too
Last thing I want is for a PS hose to develop a pinhole leak, spraying an aerosol mist of oil into the engine compartment...

Yep. Double check the steering box mounting bolts to the box section/frame rail etc. Make sure they are torqued right. No rust etc. You don't need your steering shaft snapping like happened to me!

A groan tells you there is air in the system. After fixing any leaks, hook a hose to the bleed nipple on the steering box and run it to the open reservoir. Run engine, move steering from right to left a few times, making sure the fluid doesn't run out.
