What the crap is this???

Little yellow wire hanging out on the Harmonic Balancer, cut off, is this where my missing 47 HP is going?
Is it something I need and where does it go...orrrr can I just get rid of it?

Looks like the mechanical sender for a tachometer.

As in previously installed, aftermarket tachometer?
The car is a 1976 280C with an automatic trans. I don't think they came with a tach. from factory, I could be wrong.

You can ditch it. That is an electronic pickup of some sort. They typically read a magnet or a notch (or notches/gap) to determine crank position. On more modern cars, the computer has something similar that determines crank position, but that's not likely with yours.

Maybe a prior owner was trying out a crank-fired ignition but gave up?

Easiest way to get a tach on a gas engine is an alternator or ignition signal set to the number of cylinders, so I'm not sure why they'd try off the crank.

Good luck on finding that missing 47hp. You are missing more than double of what my 72 Fiat 500 makes on a good day!

Could this car have a later engine installed? Perhaps that's from some aftermarket cruise control system?

No, original motor. Car started out in Santa Ana, CA purchased by a doctor; it was then sold to the gentleman that I bought it from, he lived in Albaquerque, NM then moved to OH. I've owned it since 1999.

I'm pretty sure this was diagnostic thing for checking timing usually only found on US versions of 70s Mercedes. I've seen a few cars with it, it usually runs to a big connector on the drivers side inner fender that sort of look like the tach amplifier connector.

It has nothing to do with the runability of the car.
