I am restoring my 1969 280SL. Questions about getting the wood trim correct.
What species of wood veneer was used on the windshield bows, speaker grille, console box, and rear window surround? What color should it be stained? (I have heard there was always only one color, and I have heard there were two colors (light and dark)?? And what clear finish was applied? I would like to get my wood trim looking exactly like it did in 1969. Any advice/leads appreciated. |

If you are serious about the appearance, the most practical solution is to have it done by a pro. It is a very specialized business. Call Drew Tibkin at Heritage Woodworks 888-255-3523. He does Mercedes wood for a lot of restorers all over the country.

Heed the advice, have it done professionally. This veneer is the thickness of a sheet of paper, very easy to mess up. There are several different woods used, mine is walnut burl.
The finish is 20 to 30 coats of Urethane with UV block |

By the way, there is an outfit in Oregon that did mine. They have been doing show cars for years and did a beautiful job on mine. Ed
