Loud valve clatter after adjustment.

I adjusted valves according to specs. 010 for intake and 025 exhaust. The valves are super loud. Could it be that I am using 10W30 oil to clean up the motor?
I have a 76, 280C, 110 motor.

A little loud is good. I have 2 280sl's with the m110 motor and if I don't hear a bit of clatter I know it needs an adjustment.

The clearance numbers as you wrote them, suggest that you adjusted the valves to: .010" and .025".

The correct clearances are: .10mm, and .25mm, e.g. .004", and .010".

I see my mistake now. I did inches instead of mm.
Well back to the dismantling and re-adjusting. Thanks Mr. Dalton and Mr. Reiner.

Hey Tomas7,

Kind of ashamed to say, but I always have someone else do this (messing with the valves kinda freaks me out). I am comming up to a point where I may need to get it done again. Once I have the special tools (bent wrench), is it as easy as it seems (how long does it take).

I wish there was like some step-by-step how to out there (complete with pics). Who showed you how to do it (any references you know of)?

Jub

Mr. Dalton was kind enough to send me this link.

Adjust valve play 1/2 (service Mercedes M110 engine) - YouTube

It really is not that difficult. I am not a tech by any means that's why I make the mistakes that I do. There are forums such as this one with a bunch of guys that are waaaay more knowledgeable than I who offer their support and help.

If you have the owner's manual it'll will tell you the gap. I bought this wrenches from ebay and it made things easier. Order the valve cover gasket ahead of time. Change it even if you don't think it needs it, you're in there anyway and it's a cheap item.

Type "valve adjustmet tool" on the ebay search bar.

Yes , sent me the link too (thanks again).

In terms of the tools: I ordered one 17 mm wrench (do I have to have two? I saw on one video that one is to tighten/loosen and another one is for the lock nut).

Oh yea and thanks for the link (I remember looking for these a while back and they were like 100 bucks).

The links are included in my post. Here's the other tool that I ordered and they were like $19.95 or so.
I ordered this tool for the very last intake valve that I couldn't turn with any other wrench.
I don't mind ordering tools, If I could ($) I would order them all even if I didn't need them.

it is so easy if you have a little patience and the right tools, just take your time and make sure the engine is cold, follow the instructions and check twice. Remember that a valve that is too loose is noisy, a valve that is too tight is burnt....a little loose is better than a little too tight. Best of luck!!
