According to my book 'Mercedes-Benz Production Models 1946-1975' C.1977
280S -- 2778 cc / 169.5 cid Compression 9:1 Power - (DIN)140 @ 5200 rpm or (SAE)157 hp @ 5400 rpm. Torque - 25.1 M/kg or 181.6 ft/lb @ 3800 rpm. Acceleration - 0-100 km/hr in 12.5 sec. Max speed - 112 mph-Auto (115 mph-Manual). The 280S automatic should be a 4 speed. Happy Motoring, Mark

Thanks dude! There is a nice 280s on Ebay right now and the owner claims he put it on a dyno and it showed about 95hp at the rear wheels and I thought that sounded weak. He was surprised it was that good. What do you guys think? Does that sound about right for that motor?

I think the British used to test 'Taxable Horsepower' at the wheels - it would be lower than at the engine.

If the SAE ratings shown were SAE gross, the resultant numbers would be higher than if an identical engine was measured today using the currently used SAE net (engine with all power-consuming accessories, etc.) method. My guess is that this motor puts out about 135 hp SAE net. As such, 95hp at the rear wheels is not out of line.

These figures are from a British Mercedes magazine:
280s 140bhp @ 5200 rpm 166lb/ft @ 3600 rpm 280se 160 bhp @ 5500 rpm 177 lb/ft @ 4250 I have a 114 280ce (I don't think they sold the injection cars until the later restricted 123 series in the states) which has the m110 twin cam six and gives 185bhp @ 6500 rpm and is very fast... I would go for an SE if you can find a good one. |
