220 D diesel into a Ponton?

Hi Sirs- I have a chance on an engine in a 1966 220D. Runs pretty well. Does anyone have experience fitting this in a Ponton? The engine mounts, the intake manifold, would need to change. I'd take off the power steering pump too. Let me know? Thanks Angus

'66 would be a 200D, not 220D, which started around '68. What year & model Ponton?
If your Ponton is an OHC four, the 220D engine might fit if it has the 4 threaded holes at the front of the block for the Ponton motor-mount brackets. Two of those threaded holes might currently be holding the power-steering pump on the 220D engine. Other fit issue might be the crank-pulley depth.
As I recall, the Ponton front stabilizer-bar is very close on the original OHC four pulley (no PS or AC on a Ponton) and might interfere with the larger pulley assy on the 220D engine. then there's the usual issues of what tranny you plan on using (Ponton clutch linkage is mechanical rod off the pedal, while the 220D clutch was hydraulic) then fabricating/adapting an exhaust pipe.

Happy Motoring, Mark

The 220D engine should bold right up to your ponton trans, if the engine in your car is a 121 or 621.
I am not sure about the fly wheel diameter on the pontons.
If they use the small fly wheels, then the 115 fly wheel will not fit into the bell housing.

You may also have a problem with the oil filter. It is mounted further forward on a 615/220D engine then on a 621 and may interfere with the front axle.

Why you need to change the intake?

If you go through the trouble to change the engine, just use one from a 240D.
The 115 models up to 76 should still have the holes for the front engine mounts and with some modification this engine can make 72 HP.

240 in a Ponton!!

Thanks you guys for your input! I never thought of putting a 240 in! Currently I have a 200D in my ponton. I pot the intake from the 190 in because I was worried the big curled up intake wouldn't fit. Besides I can use the old 190 air filter. That was years ago - now I'm much braver. Also I've got a tape measure now too!
Anyway the 220 I have in mind is only $700 and runs well so that's my motivation. But with all the work anyway, I think the 240 would be the best idea and they're readily available. From what you are saying it sounds like the basic block has not changed.
As far as the bell housing and flywheel go- I would use the 190 parts. The same thing would be for the oil filter.
OK --I'll let you know! Thanks Angus

Yes, the basic block is the same, but changing flywheel and oil filter will not be as easy as you think.

The 621 flywheel has 6 bolts and the 615 has 12.
There is also a balance problem.

If you have to move the oil filter, you have to drill the block.
Early 615 blocks still have the machined mounting surface for the older oil filters.
Drill and tap that surface to mount the 621 filter head, then put a plate over the original 615 filter mounting holes on the block.
