Replacing Starter...1971 250 (w114)...Advice?

Hi Everyone,

Just received re-built Bosch starter, and was going to swap it out this weekend.

Anyone ever done this (any pictures; advice on tools; advice on procedure)?

If all goes well, how long will this take (ball park)?

Thanks in advance,

Jub

Easy,

Two bolts, and three wires.

Disconnect battery, note where wires go, remove and replace.

Wouldnt hurt to spray the starter bolts with a good penetrating oil like Kroil before you start.

Use a couple of long extensions and a swivel for the top bolt.

Awesome!

Thanks everyone (got delayed this week; wife had some x-mas ideas involving lights a ladder...and me nearly breaking my neck).

Going to remove Thursday; stay tuned (post some pics then)!

Yep, lots of cussing...

So I removed the lower bolt (not too difficult; 19 mm wrench).

But that top bolt is a son of a gun...is it true that it's an Allen wrench?

If so, anyone know the size (what tools did you use)?

Thanks

I dont recall an allen bolt there, if it is, my guess would be 13 or 14mm
not what I did but IIRC some have gone in through the floor board using an access hole , radical , but works

Two bolts: one on the bottom, one from hell!!!

So, for my 71 250 the top one was a hex bolt (13mm). Accessed it from under car. Used a mirror with an extension I bought from autozone (even had a light attached to it), just to confirm/visualize it. Took everyone's advice and used 3 extensions and a swivel head just to reach it. After a lot of effort (and a lot of profanity and d5w), the bolt finally came loose.

Reconnected all the wires (4; three wires on front and the ground cable hooked up to top hex bolt). Total time: ~3hrs (2 of which was to loose the top hex bolt).

Turned key and car starts right up on first turn! (Recap: new starter, alternator, coils, plugs, pertronix ignition mod, gapped copper plugs, voltage regulator, battery, and external resistor). Perfection!!!

Jub, which pertronix part # did you buy for your 250 (M114 engine)?
Looking for the right one for my '69 with 230 (M180 engine) should be similar.

Harrdware,

1864A (see attached). I put my diz serial number in the pertronix website and it cranks out the recommended part. Fit perfect

If you are removing the starter in a w111 coupe 68'69... you will need a 10mm Allen wrench for the top bolt. There is a round access plate on the right side of the transmission cover inside the car that is held in by 4 screws. ( Not sure if the w114 has this access plate or not, but if it does it will make the job much quicker.) Once you remove the plate, you can get the bolt off in 5 mins. Very easy and almost impossible to get to it from under the car.
