The following was posted in Tech Help. Still need help in ID'ing this piece, the local MB Tech has been closed for the Holiday week so no help there.

-------------

On my 108, passenger side, there is a piece which looks somewhat like a tie rod. This piece sits just forward of the steering damper, and attaches to the same mount as the damper on the frame. The other end of this rod attaches to the frame crossover, at about the halfway point.

What is it, and what is the function of this piece? I ask, because while doing my oil change today, I noticed this piece was broken clean through about 2 inches from the dual mount with the damper. Since it is not mounted to any moving parts, I assume it is simply some sort of stiffener for frame integrity. I have noticed no difference in the handling of the car lately, nor have I heard any strange noises (knocking, bumping etc, from the steering).

I did not notice this defect during the last oil change 3,300 miles ago. I did recently clean the underside, removing many years of built up crud (this really made things stand out), so it is possible this has been broken for some time.

I now know what the part is - it is the front stabilizer bar. Unfortunately the one from the parts car at the local MB Tech has already been pulled, so the search begins.

According to Franz, the bar could have broken due to hitting a solid object (usually results in bending the bar) or worn/bad sub frame mounts. I will be checking those out when I get a replacement stabilizer.

Mike, Larry Delor had a parts car/piece parts available on the Swap Shop page. I just posted a question to bring it up to the top of the posts.

Sorry I did not see your question in Tech Help. Now that Suzanne is "in the stable", I will be glad to help identify unknown parts, circuits etc. Digital camera is available from work to help out! If you find a source in ATL you need me to check on, just let me know!

Pete,

I'll take a look at Larry Delor's parts car, and keep it in mind for future reference. I think I already have a line on a replacement part here in So. Cal. (same guy I got the steering pump from). We'll see if it pans out.

Now that I figured out how to depart the intranet and access the internet, I better be careful, or I'll spend every free minute at the office hanging 'round the shop. Gotta get back to work.

Which engine does the 280SE you're looking at have? I have seen some with the 4.5, a real rocket of an engine in the SEL, should be even more so in an SE. In good condition the 108's hide their age well, not looking nearly 30 years old. Plus, being the last of the hand built Benz's (I believe) makes them keepers.

I hope to get a 126 or a 124 diesel some day, and I'm already trying to find a way to keep the 108 too. I gotta admit, it's hard justifying a 6th car in the stable.

Mike, We have a lot of similarities! I also have five cars (two licensed drivers). Most all have high mileage, the lowest is 142,000, but they are all paid for, and my justification to my wife, who has agreed with me, is that I do all my own work, buy then at less than retail prices, and always have a back up car available when one is down!

I guess my proudest moment was when my ten year old son questioned me as I was cleaning up our low mileage van to sell (still not officially for sale) "Daddy, what car are you going to get next?" My plan is to buy a VW Micro bus in CA next summer and take the northern route home! A BMW 2002 would be nice as well, but ultimately, I want a 190 SL or 280SL.

My advice is don't sell a car that you like if it is paid for! Keep that odometer rolling and rolling and rolling....

Hmmm, let's see, keep the 108 and sell the wife's 64 MGB, nope that'd be death - mine.

I'll just have to draw up a parking plan, or use the neighbor's driveway, hehehe.

Or use your lot at the "road block". Guys laugh at work, but I always keep a spare car at the airport where I work. If I have a car brake down, I can always get home. If I car pool in, and one of us has to stay late, there is always an out!

And the best benefit, is the boss always sees your car there when he gets to work, and it is always there whe he leaves. He thinks I'm the hardest working SOB he has! Little does he know I while away the hours as a no charge consultant and comedian at "The Shop"! (and not a very good one at that).

But seriously, it is a very good option. Sometimes I have three cars at the airport! This is frowned upon, but I consistantly get away with it. DeltaDave, you better not rat on me!

The 280SE that I will most likely get, has the six in it. It has a gold exterior, and dark brown leather interior. The exhaust is new, and the A/C is supposed to be Ice cold. Mileage is somewhere around 130k give or take.
Anything that I really ought to inspect closely that could easily be missed?

-thanks!
-Larry

I'm not sure if the SE has the chrome moulding strip running along the rocker panels or not. If it does, look closely at the area, rust will begine to form in the front fenders, just about under that strip.

Also let the car run at idle for a bit, and see if the steering box is leaking, and if so, how bad. Mine leaks and I have to get the box rebuilt, but it's not so bad that I have to do it NOW. If it leaks enough to leave a good sized spot, in say 10 minutes, then you'll be looking at $400.00 or so in steering work from the get go.

Good cold A/C is a big plus. My A/C now puts out 41 degrees at the center vents, all it needed was 1 1/2 lbs R-12. The sight glass is hard to see, down low right side of grille. Should be clear, then cycle to showing some bubbles, with the cycling of the compressor. Steady bubbles, freon is low, no bubbles ever, probably too much freon.

I would also suggest getting under the car and checking the front stabilizer, make sure it is intact. This is the piece I was looking for, attaches to the bracket with the steering damper and connects to the frame crossover. I was able to locate one at a local dismantler, and he had to go through 4 cars before he found one intact.

Keeping the fingers crossed for you Larry.

What kind of timing chain mtc is recommended on the six? You might listen carefully for slap on start up, if it is anything like the 4.5 V8. Youwould be a valued 280 brother! I hope the car deal works out!
