1963 W111 220 S Mystery Wire under hood

Here's a mystery wire next to the coil in the car. I don't know much about ignition coils, is it to be attached somewhere?

The car will start without this wire.

The battery went from charged to dead overnight.

Probably unrelated but I have no idea yet.

thanks
Scott

FWIW, radio seems to have no power. Does wire go to ground or to the coil?

It goes on the coil. I would leave it off. It won't power the radio.

Is there a reason _not_ to connect it to the coil? Is it for radio suppression? I'm inclined to not just have it hanging there if there is a "right" place to put it...

On my car I have one wire from negative and two from positive as such:

On coil from negative (-) terminal: One black wire going to distributor.
On coil from positive (+) terminal: One black wire going to the ballast resistor.
Another blue wire going into the main harness.

As further info I also have three red wires connected to the side opposite the black wire on the ballast resistor. One each goes to distributor, alternator, into main harness (this one is red striped).

Please ask if you need more help or clarification.

Edit: I found this sketch I made when I switched out my coil and ballast resistor for new. I have Pertronix system in play as well but as long as you have a ballast resistor this is the same setup. If you have a Pertronix coil or otherwise with built in resistor then the setup would be slightly different but you can find the info on the Pertronix website.
