HELP! with my 250CE

Hi,
I have a '69 Model 250CE which is making a rather loud noise from the right rear axle area. The left hand side axle is floating as they're meant to, but the Right Hand Side is locked up, and if you move it lengthways it stops the noise for a short period.

any ideas what to do, once i have removed the brakes, and rotor, do i undo that large bolt in the middle and pull the hub off, or is there a tool required?

Is there any other suggestions?. i really need a manual for this car too, i've only had it a week. and i am very impressed with it.

P.S if anyone has any other info's on 250CE's it would be greatly appreciated too.

Thanks in advance for your help
Regards
Russell

introduction to service 250CE

Russell,

The EFI system in that car is unusual, and for the most part not documented. It's similar to the 280SE 4.5 & 300sel 4.5 (or down by you, the 3.5) fuel system. Other varients were used by volvo, VW and others.

What you need, for the engine at least, is the "Introduciton to Service 250CE" manual I picked up about a month ago, in Australia no less.

I can send you a xerox copy of it. Send me an email off-list for details.

As for the rest of the car, the 114/115 chassis & body manual covers everything except the engine & transmission. (ie the problem you are having). The manual can be picked up on paper from ebay, or on CD either from this website or ebay, or John Green at www.mbspares.com.au, etc.

-CTH

PS. That's one lovely car, enjoy it.

If you are trying to remove the axle, you need to remove the caliper and the large bolt in the center of the hub. You then use a special tool to compress the axle shaft to clear the hub. Having removed the rear diff. cover, you remove the circlip holding the axle.

But CTH is right. You really need some documentation before trying this. The Haynes manual for the 230, 250, 280 SOHC has this procedure.

thanks for your help guys,
i bought the haynes manual today, i'm sure i'll buy the rest as i need it.

i have the non EFI model.... it had a zenith while the PO had it, it died and he put a Ford Weber on there from an Australian XF Falcon.

i can see i have the slots for MFI on there, i am sure the shaft removal will be an exciting proceedure....

TIA
Russ

Ah, somebody downgraded the thing. Not necessarily a bad idea.

tread carefully under the hood until you can confirm what other things are no longer stock. double check your chassis & engine numbers while you're at it to make sure that it really is a 250ce.

There's a good chance that they also swapped out the original ignition system for something "better" in their mind (and only in their mind).

Your car should have a blue coil, two balast resistors and an armored metal box wired into the system (just look under the battery tray in the most difficult to reach spot that you can imagine).

There may not be anything wrong with the conversions, but then again, you might discover that the cure is worse than the disease.

Keep us in the loop (collectively, we're good armchair mechanics and if you can get a digital camera, send us pictures and details of the carb setup.
