Neat little car. The seat swap may (probably) cost you a buyer, as may the speakers in the door panels and the lack of air con.

I live in Cave Creek and whenever I have to venture into Phoenix or anywhere out of my area code I almost always take something with airbags. You'll want your son in something with air bags driving with the crazy ****s in phoenix. Honestly the drivers are extra deadly out here.

Looks like you're really in a pickle, caught between wanting your son safe, having to satisfy the wife, and actually wanting to do what YOU want to do. Like a Frank sang, that's life.

Well unless you actually get some serious $$$ offer on your 220, I would keep it and get another car.

You car looks so good! I had only seen the headliner photos you put up a while back, but the whole car is excellent. I really hope your sale goes well.

Yeah, the car is pretty nice and thanks for the feedback. The quick photos, especially the interior do not do justice, I need to do a quick dusting and shoot the interior in good light.

Yes, I realize I will not get what I put into it, especially my time anyway, but I enjoyed every moment. Parts I really got great deals on through Rock Auto, Peach Parts etc. - I really "shopped the sales" and fell into some smokin good buys.

I would drive the car just about anywhere if gas prices allowed and it's not death valley, but when I think about my 18 year old son, I would prefer something safer, especially in the Phoenix Metro area - it can be crazy on the highways there - like a little LA! While I can take a lot of heat, July-Sept. can be just crazy hot with 116° temps daily - and with HUGE glass windows (need to tint) and no AC, combined with the stress of that heat on a 44 year old car . . . . I just feel better having a no brainer car for him. Besides I would have to teach him to drive a stick well enough to be second nature in "The Big City" - AND Phoenix Driving really wigs him out as it is - he does not like it at all. (We live in a very small town).

So I put the car on ebay and have 270 views with 9 "watchers" - no doubt someone will low ball me with some $500 offer at the end of the auction! I put it up on ebay more for a "test of the waters" then anything with a "Buy It Now Price and a "Make me an offer". I may very well have better luck with a sign on it and drive it around town - God knows how many people have stopped to tell me how "cool" the car is around town - always makes me feel good.

Trade - I put it on Craigs List for kicks too - with an offer to accept trades, which I think may work well with the right person/car. I had one guy offer a possible trade his 2000 Toyota Sienna Mini Van for it . . . which actually may work out well for me, I was entertaining a Mini Van. My wife and I had plans to give our 2002 (only 64,000 miles) Hyundai Accent to my son as it's the most reliable car we have. I have to see the Van, you know how that could go, might be great, or might be a beater! If it works out, I will have a good car that I can keep or, always flip in the future a lot easier than Das Benz . . .

Yes, I could just keep it, but with college starting in Aug. and a fixed income, it can be challenging to come up with the $ to pay cash for something when I know that I will have a mass of other expenses. Just trying to be practical and make something happen with what I have. We thought about leasing or buying a car but who wants a car payment . . . at least not now.

This little 220 is just a fun little piece of history and I enjoy keeping it on the road, and if I can find someone to adopt it and keep it alive then great.

The saga continues - will have to see if anyone bites on ebay by the time it ends on Sat. I doubt it but . . . you never know. Perhaps i will go see "The Van" over the Holiday weekend or next week (the guy lives an hour away) and either go for it, or get it out of my system.

Thanks for listening and as always, thanks for the input.
Chris

Hey! I have never hesitated to drive one of my old Mercedes cars here in LA. Well, I guess the scariest fintail with no brakes I won't really drive, but the others? Why not! But I completely understand your point about a son who hasn't driven in the big city, isn't really used to stick, small town, etc. You are a nice dad for giving him the car with airbags and AC to use.

I'm one of your ebay watchers. At least you will get some exposure.

I suggest you run an autocheck or carfax report on the Sienna before you spend an hour driving to it. and/or meet the owner half-way in the middle of nowhere!!!!

GLWS.

On a related note, here's one of my favorite craigslist search strings to use:

In the category of for sale, cars and trucks, by owner put in:

(divorce|elderly|death|*****|bastard|inherit*)
with a top price of $5000 and if you want, a minimum year.
Do not check the "title" box.

Then you get the listings that have any of those words in the text. You get people going through divorce, inheritance, or just mad at their husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend. Kinda fun, particularly the ones that say "That bastard is cheating on me so I'm gonna sell his corvette to the first person who brings me $1"

It happens. Rare, but it happens.

NOTE: in the search string the forum seems to have blanked out the word *****, so just so you know the word I had there sounds a lot like beach.

The pt would be great, now I just need some cash in hand to buy something! I have to say, I have found a good deal of "good deals" locally on CL. Amazing what you can find.

I think the PT Cruiser seller had you with the description: "I know you can already imagine yourself windows down wind blowing through your hair while you throttle up this sex machine. I'll even consider throwing in the death metal CD I found when I acquired this bad beast." It certainly made me laugh! Maybe seller would like to swap for the 220 !!!

Sold DasBenz tonight for $2400. Went to a great new home, young man who loves vintage mercedes and his whole family wrenches on cars. Grandpa had a 220 and he loved it as a kid.

I am going to introduce him to this forum. Keeping it alive with your help.

Thanks to everyone for all the help and encouragement along the way.
