Value of 1970 230/8???

Hi

I have been offered a truly original, very close to mint 1970 230/8 W114. Original, top shine black paint. Dentless. Absolutly NO rust, superclean. Spotless red interior, supertight driver. Well documented 53000 KM. Always garaged when not driven. Full history. Have to see to belive, never seen it's like.
Asking price is 22K USD. Very tempted....
Opinions?

Where you are located will have some bearing on the price.
Since you reference KM vice miles and give an equivalent USD price I assume you are outside the USA, which may affect the price structure.

Twenty two large is way above what the market will support, even for a coupe. A 70 230 has the old 2.3L 6 cyl finback engine, not the nicer 2.8L M130 mill used in later cars.

Also, the W114 coupes are the only slash 8 cars that appear to even have a hint of appreciation in their future.

While it sounds like a very nice car, 22K is too much. If you are really high on the car, let time be you're friend, eventually the seller will accept reality (and a reasonable price), one would hope. At 2X plus the current market, I doubt this car will be a fast sale, or a sale at all.....

With the limited info, it is hard to say. There clearly are rare instances of w114s selling for over $20K, but as Jim says above, it is the coupe that has the most value.

Here is a 72 250C coupe that sold for $26K.
1971 250C 39,000 original miles for sale classified

Also, mercedesmotoring.com frequently has asking prices for similar cars in the mid $20Ks. I don't know the eventual selling prices, though.

Basically, you may get lots of advice here, but the only one that decides if the car is worth 22K is you. There is no market to use to compare. If you love the car and aren't buying it for an investment, then by all means. But if you want this to appreciate in price, and sell easily for more money then you spent, I would advice against this purchase. People willing to spend that much money on a w114 are EXTREMELY rare, so resale will the a challenge. Good luck.

Hi Jim

You're right, location is Norway.
And I guess we have a different pricelevel.
First, In the seventies, the economy here made MB a quite rare car and our climate + the use of salt in the winter killed most of these cars.
So, the "natural" population of these cars is very small to begin with.
An Original Norwegian-sold car with a documented history will get god money.
And Germany is not far away, it can be a market.
Anyway, I did't tell the whole story, the car was originaly sold to my wifes aunt, it was her first car after getting her license at the age of 52.
It's been the topic of many local tales, and it sort of disapeared after she sold it.
Just by accident I stumbled over the car a few weeks ago, and I am very tempted indeed.
Having 2 300SEL 6.3 in the garage, I feel it's enough as it is, but this possibility might never come again.
And again, it's one of a kind here, it's immaculate.
To be continued... ;-)

Tom

If you have the money for a trophy piece knowing full well that from an investment standpoint it is not a good one, spend the money and enjoy it. From a practical / cost standpoint, I don't think this is the best way to spend $22k on a Mercedes. But again, if it makes you happy and have the money, get it.

Well said, apply your criteria, including the emotional value and if the price is within your discretionary income limit, buy it and enjoy it.

I'm the custodian for a few of the family cars. For me, the emotional value is huge on these cars and their value to me far surpasses what the retail market would support. In my case, they are a double edged sword, cost wise. I didn't necessarily pay a lot for the cars, but I'm also obligated to try to keep them in the family if I can no longer hold them myself, which limits the return on the car... But from an emotional standpoint, the value is priceless.

How many people still have the first vehicle they ever drove? How many people have the car they used at their wedding? Brought home all the kids from the hospital after they were born? The car Mom drove for years when they were growing up? Great memories, and just a walk out to shop relives them....

The obligation to try to keep the car in the family sounds like a fairly difficult one and probably one that isn't fair to place on yourself. The obligation to find a loving owner is quite difficult as it is... Sure, it's great if their is a niece or nephew that holds an interest in the car, but chances are that it won't last as long as forever...

I'm a "no" to all of those. After my father died about 10 years ago I added his beat-up work truck to my car collection and drove it to work for a couple of years and got the A/C fixed. That was very sentimental to me.

I have a friend who owns the 2 door Corvair that HE was driven home from the hospital in when he was born. It has something like 23,000 miles on it and at least one original tire. Needless to say, it isn't a driver at this point and is probably very much in need of some care. But it's parked indoors and hasn't been moved in probably 25 years...

My mother and father owned a few cars that by today's standards are considered interesting - a 1957 T-bird (before my time) and a 1969 Dodge Charger (when I was 7 to 9 I think). On and a 1973 Mazda RX-2. That was an amusing car. The rest of them were quite forgettable.

Based on my previous experiences with a 114 gasser/automatic, I would be reluctant to pay much over $500 for one. For a manual transmission I would go a little higher. Recently I saw a '69 220D four speed in good condition advertised for $2500. I would consider that a fair price. I probably would have bought it but for two things: 1. It was red. I try to reserve red for Ferraris and Ducatis. 2. I already have two vehicles and don't really need three.

Well, fair or not, I enjoy having these family artifacts.

I suppose it would make a difference if the car or truck was something forgettable, but in my case, the vehicles I've kept are quite fun for me.

My first drive alone was at the family farm in my Uncle's 54 Chevy deluxe 5 window 1/2 ton stepside when I was 13 in '68.

When I was married in '79, we used my Uncle's car as our wedding car. He bought the 55 Ford Fairlane Sunliner new. Red/White, black convertible top. I just rolled over 50K miles.

Our three daughters rode home from the hospital (89, 91, 93) in my 64 Lincoln Continental convertible that I bought from the original owner's estate in '74 with 27K miles. Now has 58K miles.

There are a few others, like the E320 cab and the MGB, that while lacking a family connection, that will still be kept......

Each girl has a favorite, so some will get passed down. The remaining ones will get offered to the family first, then friends, then sold if no one picks them up.

I'm not alone, two of my cousins also have significant family cars in their collections as well, several with family ownership traceable back 60 or more years.

It all didn't just happen. My wife and I are also old house and antique fans, so the cars just naturally are part of our interests. I also had an appreciation for "special" cars even at a young age, and between building infrastrucure and indulging in acquisition opportunity from an early age, I was able to shelter the cars as they became available, and since many were limited use, they have remained in good condition over the years.

Much of the early cost was funded by buying needy cars, repairing them, then rolling the money into another project, etc., so there wasn't the marital strain of taking money from household expenses to fund the collection.

It is indeed satisfying to just go out and reminisce about the times we've enjoyed by driving them occasionally, or even just looking at them. There is something pretty special about having THE car you remember, vice having A car that is similar to the one you remember... I'm also very fortunate to have a supporting spouse, can't underestimate that value!

Jim

I'm not disagreeing with you. Having them and enjoying them is the up-side. The obligation to make sure they stay in the family sounds like it might be difficult, but if people in the family actually WANT the cars then I think what you are talking about is really special.

FWIW, I have no children or nieces/nephews or siblings that would want cars ever. So I can't keep them in the family, although I would like to have been able to if that were a possibility.
