L R Tyre off Plumb
My 108's left rear tire has a slight lean in at the top, to the point it dramatically wore the inner edge of the tire. I removed the tire and found nothing obviously amiss. Put on the spare and noticed both rear tires now tilted in at the bottom, while the rear was up in the air. But upon driving, the rear settled and the left tire resumed its odd angle. The right hower was even. Is this a worn spring or is there some sort of adjustment of rear camber/caster?

The Chiltons is very vague here. Is the inner A-arm bolt eccentric?

Cmon guys, someone has to have messed with the rear suspension, or is this something to ignore and hope it goes away like carburator troubles.

I will look on my CD, and in the Haynes manual tonight to see if there are any adjustments. The spring would make the car lower but should not change camber/caster.

This car has the swing axle suspension and a weak spring will affect the camber [ negative] . There is no castor .
The bottom spring support cradles can be turned to 4 different positions for camber , but this is only a fine adjustment. You may also change the top spring rubber mount to a thicker one. And lastly, there is a compensating cross spring , but weakness here drops both sides. Be aware that the right side always has more neg camber than the right because the fulcum on these is offset to the right of chassis center-line, therefor the right axle is shorter. This is reflected in the specs. |

The 108 cars used a swing axle rear suspension with a gas compensator spring mounted across the differential.
It's normal for the axles to droop/wheels to tip out at the top (positive camber), when the car is jacked up in the rear. They will do the opposite (negative camber) when the rear is heavily loaded or when the gas compensator spring fails. Usually this affects BOTH rear wheels. The gas compensator is often replaced with the cheaper, more reliable, coil spring unit, as used in the earlier swing axle cars. You could have a compensator starting to fail or a weak spring or a combination of problems. Happy Motoring, Mark
