Fuel additives, bad results?

Has anyone out there ever had issues after using fuel additives?

I'm talking about carb/injector cleaner etc...

The other day I added a bottle of STP fuel system cleaner to a 3/4 tank of gas. Before adding it, my car was running fine. Now it seems to not be so happy so I'm wondering if anyone else has had this experience...

Fuel additives can dislodge crud in old fuel systems and clog filters, screens, jets and injectors. Hopefully it's just a clogged fuel filter, so that's the first thing to check. If it's really clogged, expect more blockage upstream. Intake screens in fuel tanks are easily clogged with dislodged crud. Keep inspecting/changing fuel filters till they stay clean.

Find a place to insert an inline fuel filter with a transparent bowl upstream of the OEM fuel filter, so you can visually monitor fuel condition and catch big chunks.

Good call John

I guess I didnt even suspect the simple thing...
The inline filter I have now is under 600 miles but I guess you never know. It is metal so I have no way of checking it without removing and blowing through it.

I do have a universal Autozone clear plastic one sitting in the garage. The thing is though, I didnt put it in becuase I thought it might melt being plastic and all. Currently the filter in the car is essentially resting in front of the rocker cover.

i ran a bottle of chemtool through when i first picked it up along with a lead additive.. after that tank my mpg jumped about 2-3mpg. every now and then i drop another bottle of additive i find it makes the car idle much nicer.

Fixed it.
It was the inline filter. I could barely blow through it....clogged city.

Now I feel abit stupid but at the same time, with such an old car one can tend to over think what's wrong.
Anyways, thanks for the assist John!

I would not put that plastic filter after the fuel pump, I'n not sure if the plastic can withstand the pressure in an EFI system.
Putting a filter before the pump is not so good either, as these pumps are not that good at sucking fuel - that is why they are placed as low as possible.

Thanks for the heads up vandor.
Its a dual carb set up so the plastic should hold until I can pick up a real filter.
