I have never seen anything like this. It is not orignal. If I had to guess, it is some sort of vent to draw off crankcase vapors - maybe to pass a smog test. Where does the other line go?

It's definately got something to do with emissions.. I'll trace the other line.. it goes to back of the engine compartment but I don't know where it connects.

It might be a long shot but I was reading in another post about a smoking 73 280 that was getting oil into a similair device that was malfunctioning and sucking oil into the exhaust manifold.

I'm going to try a compression test soon and I'll trace the other hose then.

It is emissions-related - back in the trunk somewhere you will find a container, probably with charcoal in it, to contain the emissions. My 280C had a similar arrangement, but from the factory. I had the post about the smoke, and it was a bad vacuum pump.

The other line goes to the back of the mount for the oil filter. A couple of months ago it was dripping oil. I'm guessing that it contains the charcoal you speak of. I doubt bypassing it will effect the blowby.. or maybe replacing it would reduce some of the blowby? On that note would getting a new muffler reduce some of the smoke?
