W115/114 trunk floor replacement questions

Hello everyone,

I am working on a 1975 240D. The trunk floor was very rusty so I bought replacement trunk floor pieces from the MB Classic Center and am currently working cutting the old one out. I am close to getting that done but have run into a few problems. The first is the area near the springs. If you look at the left spring, you will see the top of the spring extends beyond the shock tower and is actually resting on the trunk floor.

Looking underneath, it looks like there is a piece of sheet metal welded to the bottom of the trunk floor.

Looking at the replacement trunk floor piece you will see on the edge that it is welded to the shock tower support beam and welds around right around the shock tower.

Looking at the trunk, you can roughly see (sorry for the bad picture) under the seam sealer that the trunk floor bends up and is welded to the shock tower support beam (around where the bump in the panel is) until it reaches the shock tower where that bended bit ends and just the edge is welded to the shock tower, just like the trunk floor cutout.

So looking at these things, it appears that the trunk floor is supporting the springs. How do I replace the floor in this area? I was thinking about cutting around this area, leaving the old sheet metal there, and butt welding the new panel to it but the old trunk floor is pretty rusty in this area. Maybe someone who has replaced a trunk floor in there /8 could give explanation on how to do this?

My other question is about this triangular piece.

It is held by six weld beads to the trunk floor pieces and the back wall where the tail lights are mounted.

What exactly is the function of this piece? Is it structural?

I am new to doing body work and the /8's cavernous trunk makes for a much much more difficult job to replace the trunk floor than on most cars.

Thanks,

John

Bumper mount I believe.

The answer to your question is yes. In fact ALL welded sheet metal parts are structural on this body style.

I've never had to replace the panel beneath the coil spring mount. I doubt you could separate the plates. I've always trimmed the floor pan to the edge of the spring area and welded to the top layer.

Looking at it again the old trunk floor only has some minor surface rust in the corners where the springs are resting. I think I will do your suggestion mike and just cut around that piece of sheet metal underneath and weld to the top. Much less of a headache.

As to the bumper cover, can that be removed or would bracing be needed? Is the bumper cover their mainly for aesthetics or is it providing important structure? The back wall of the car seems to be adequately supported by the quarter panels, the channel on the left, and the wheel tub on the right. What do you guys think?
