220se for 250s engine swap
Will a 1964 220 se 6 cyl auto on column fit into. 1967 250 s auto w column. My engine in the 67 is seized and I can get a running 64 220 se 6 cylinder for cheap.

My answer is "probably" but I'm not sure it's the best engine swap. I would look for a 280SE engine to put it in. I put a 280S engine with webers into my 250S that had no engine and it was a little tricky given the different location of the oil cooler, etc but not too difficult. Is the 64 220SE a parts car? Seems like a pretty interesting parts car...

The engine will fit. The block for 220, 230, 250 and 280 are the same size. You will be going from a 2.5 liter to a 2.2 liter engine, which means less horsepower. Your transmission should bolt up.
Like Scooter, I installed a 280S motor in my 220Sb car. My 2.2 liter engine was seized when I got the car. I put an ounce of transmission fluid in each spark plug hole and let it sit for a week. Then I used a socket with ratchet and 3 foot section of pipe for leverage to hand turn the motor. Then the motor ran with fresh gas from a satellite can. You definitely want to change oil immediately after getting the motor un-seized. And check your oil at EVERY gas fill up. These engines use oil. Not uncommon to go through quarts between oil changes. You don't want to know how I know...

you want to replace the carb'd 250S motor with an FI one?
You'll want the FI wiring, including a few relays. Not difficult to install. You'll need different down-pipes on the exhaust. The angle from the manifold isn't the same. There was a guy in NJ with a 280S motor. He'd probably ship it. That is straight drop in replacement, except that you need slightly larger carbs than what the 250S has. I don't recall if the 280S had carbs. -CTH |

There were a couple of gotchas when I went put the 280S engine into the 250S body. The ones that I can think of are a) oil cooler - you'll need the one from the 250S since the 280S is expecting it to be part of the radiator b) smog pump vs. power steering, etc. Some of the stuff is in a different location and you may need the brackets from the 250S to install the stuff right on the 280S engine. Not sure what is different about the trans cooler - I think it might be the same.

Engine swap
Thanks for your input everyone. I guess I will look for a 280 to install.

I am using the Solex carbs from my 220Sb motor on my 280S motor and is runs very well.

you're in luck then. Look at western mass craigslist. There's a fellow with a 250 (he meant to say 250s) being parted out. He and I already traded an email. He says the motor is recently rebuilt. He's just outside springfield.
