Door problem - 78 240D

Hey everyone,

I've owned my 1978 240D for a little over a year without having to register on these boards, but have referenced them frequently haha.

My wife used the 240D today and called me saying she couldn't get the door shut. Well it shuts and latches but not securely. There is still some play in the door and it doesn't lock tight. I can turn the locks with the key however and the latch seems functional. The check strap seems lose and the door always tries to close. But is the check strap integral to the door shutting securely or is this a vacuum issue?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

If it Doesn't completely latch it sounds like a vacuum issue.

If a door doesnīt close completely, the vacuum system will not activate (I donīt remember if the entire system is affected or just the door thatīs ajar).

Yes, a door check can keep a door from closing completely if it is loose, and if broken can leave a door stuck in a complete open position after you open it. Door checks are inexpensive and easy to replace.

Check the latch on the B pillar. Looks a bit like a finger sticking out at you.

If the little plastic tab is missing from the end the door will only latch in the first position, it will not shut completely. Compare the suspect one with the other latches on the car.

Latches are specific side to side, find a used rear one and install it.
Note the number of shims under the latch and make sure you replace them.

It's common for these to break, especially the driver's one.
