Engines not turning (not good).

Anyone have a spare and reputable 71 6 cylinder dual carbed engine for sale? Could I swap in an 8 cylinder (280, a straight swap)?

She's alive!!!!!!!

Update: so, waited till the weather was warmer (was in the teens last I posted, now 70-80's). I have been busy restoring the 72 250, figured I'd get her in tip top shape and when I get a week or so vacation time pull the engine and put her in my 71 250 (my pride and joy) if push came to shove....I missed her.

Got the dwell, timing, and sync he'd my carbs in 72 250 (purrs like a kitten), so turned my attention back to the 71. I pulled plugs, drained oil, and jacked car up so I could get a better angle on turning engine by hand...but still was jammed. So, tried turning counter clockwise (at the risk of skipping cog on crank shaft)...still jammed. So, figured what the heck let me kick the damn thing ccw on the tork wrench...then it jolted forward...it moved. Figured crap, jumped a tooth.

But nope, pulled it back clockwise and engine turned smoothly. Jumped in car turned key...the mf turned over like nothing happened! Kissed her on her sweet blue fender, welcome back! Now, oil drained, battery low, plugs pulled, and low on gas (and 11pm eastern Time). I'll fix her up tomorrow, but 95% certain...she's ALIVE!!!!!!! (Young Frankenstein reference; elated)!!!!

280 is a straight 6, there are no factory V8 w114s.

You know I guess my question re-phrased is: what does an oil gauge really tell you? I mean when you have alternator issues, light flashes. When gas runs out, light flashes (and gauge gives you heads up). Break fluid low, light flashes.

On other cars I have, when oil is low light flashes. So, why not just have a low oil light. What info does a constantly changing oil gauge tell you (my gear shifted from 1st to second gear?...redundant but ok).

What value does this hold?
IN THE FIRST FIVE POSTS I did not see a mention of any year or model of car.
I see a list of cars owned, maybe I missed a headline.

I am intercepting an earlier post , because the main topic is oil pressure.
It is Important to know what car we are talking about.
The w114/5 lines had a O.P. gauge connected with an oil line.
"Tom" , however had a 1984 300SD which had a sensor built in the block, which would then transmit a signal to a gauge and there could be several sources of error, while the older gauges mostly either worked or did not, in which case they leaked black oil all over your lap (from the instrument cluster down....)

I just thought I mention that.
It my have been addressed later in the thread, but I did not read that far.

Alex

ever changed the timing chain

Absolutely thrilled it is running again! Not to rain on the parade though... if you have not changed the timing chain or know that it was changed before you bought it, you really should look at doing that right away. If things locked up on you without causing catastrophic damage you are incredibly lucky. I'd make sure the timing chain is fresh and new so things don't get out of sync again and completely destroy the engine the second time around.
