Bought 71' 220D What is it worth?
Guys I am new to this site. I just bought a 1971 MB 220D. I know nothing about these cars or their value, we usually buy and sell corvettes. This car appears to have 29k actual miles and to have been in storage for quite some time. The interior is almost in perfect condition. My husband is replacing all of the calipers, pads, and brake hoses for me, much to his dismay. The paint is good but does have some cracks ( looks like spidering over fiberglass would). The interior is black and the exterior is white. The door says it was made 1/71 in Germany. It has two manuals with it one in mostly german the other in english. This cars worst problem is that it has sat for so long, the rubber bushings are bad. This car starts right up and sounds good now that the filters and fluids have all been changed. Any idea what the car is worth? My husband hates this car, where can I get a good manual for him?

Re: Bought 71' 220D What is it worth?
There is a certain amount of subjectivity involved that is hard to judge without seeing the car.
Ballpark would be $2k-5k It seems the only cars from this year that hold any higher value are SL's, convertable's or cabriolet's. However it sounds like if this car in great shape mechanically that you'llbeable to enjoy driving it for years with some basic maintenace. Check ebay for manuals.. there are some websites with publications.. maybe somebody else can post those.

Good luck on this project...
Hope your diesel carries on OK! As noted, these cars tend to fall into the "interesting transportation" category rather than being collectable. Low milage on old MB diesels not necessarily a GOOD thing...these cars were made to be driven (200,000 miles with no major work not unusual), and numerous problems re: rubber, brakes, etc. accrue to "hanger queens."
Some reading you might profit by: "Vintage Mercedes Benz Buyers Guide," a $20 paperback you can get at most Borders/Barnes&Nobles, has a LOT of insight into these cars and others considered to be of the daily driver-class (like mine). Would also suggest you join the Mercedes Benz Club of America (www.mbca.com) if only for The Star, their excellent magazine with a large classified section for parts, etc. Don't know if Haynes still publishes the mechanical manual for your car, but will check. These cars are paradoxical in that, while their dollar "value" may seem modest, they are among the last cars of any make so well thought out and over built that they will serve you FOREVER if just given nominal care |

I bought a '72 220D about 1-1/2 years ago, with 5 new tires, new cooling system (radiator, water pump, hoses), new belts, in very good condition, for $1000. I bought it from the original owner. The odometer was about "32,000 miles." However, those older odometers only go to 99,999, so that I assumed from the records the PO had, that it actually had 132,000 miles.
Mine is a 4-speed, light yellow, with palomino MB-Tex upholstry. These cars were very commonly used as taxis in Europe. Mine gets about 25 mpg. They have only 65 hp, so acceleration is not very great. However, they can drive all day long at 65-70 mph. Since they are noisy, you'll need to turn the radio up.

I bought mine back in 1995 with a bit over 62k original miles and the P.O. had it sitting in a barn for years (I was actually going to look at a bmw he had for sale and saw one of those lovely headlights peeking out of the barn and asked if he'd like to sell it). I offered $700 which he took and have had it ever since. Its been sitting (again) since I ended up with four more mb's and when I finally did get back to her, she hasn't started although she used to start right up.I agree about the damage done with the "hanger queens" because she now needs brakes bad which were already going soft when I got her.
Even though its no rocket off the line, once she's going I'd drive her forever on the highway in 90 degree plus weather without her even flinching her temp gauge! She still gets compliments "sitting" when she's polished and chrome shining. Man, I gotta get her back on the road (when I can get her started again-the battery of my buddy's tractor trailer rig's amps went low as heck when we tried to jump her off! We were both like wow what a little monster this sucker is! By the way, if anyone can give ME some info as far as what kind of battery they use in their 220D it would be useful to me as the one that came with it wasn't the original one and just worked alright for a while--it doesn't fill the battery tray and obviously this one needs a very powerful one for start up). Thanks and good luck Alan p.s. Haynes DOES make a repair manual for the 220D and has been helpful for me (the 220 was MY first mb also and is sentimental to me so she'll be with me for a while!)

Try Battery Warehouse...
this is a national franchise, and they carry (or can order) EVERY battery you can think of, from hearing aid to tractors.
I have their batteries in my old VW, in my 240D, and a six volt positive ground in my Packard. Quality products, and good values. |
