While waiting for the carpet to be finished, we decided to fix up the paint on the roll bar. Just primed and painted with rattle cans. We were sure to cover the vehicle while spraying so it didn't get anywhere else. Also did the job outside.

Time for Knock-Off Wire Wheels and New Tires

We decided to swap out the Mercedes wheels for a set of knock-offs, complete with the hub conversion kit too of course.

We like the new look a lot! What do you think?

Tire size is 185/60/14.

More to come so stay tuned!

Rear Brake Drum Inspection & Service

After inspecting the front brakes some time ago, we turned our attention to the rear drum assemblies.

After closer inspection, it was clear that the friction washers were well-worn and needed replacing along with a couple of the washer pins.

The pins are fastened with a cotter pin to the backing plate.

Once the shoe assembly was removed, attention turned to the friction washer pin assembly.

Using a vice, we unfastened the assembly but no need to use a press as the washers were so worn there was very little tension at all.

Drum service continued....

You can see, some of the pins had seen better days.

New washers ready to be installed.

Quick cleaning of the friction washer tube.

Here's a great shot of the replacement washers and the order of assembly.

Using a press, the assembly is fastened together. The shoes themselves were fine so the entire kit was put back together to spec.

Looks good! Did you guys use any type of silicone lube on those parts, or is there concern that'd just collect dust in a closed drum system?

Tommy ;

I'd imagine better to use a dustless rifle typ grease like the M-B sun roof rail grease...

I just use a sparing amount of long fiber Lithium grease on brake shoes .
