Steering Box Adjustment
I would like to adjust out the slop of the steering box of my '77 280E. From 1976 to 1978 the M110 engine has an intake manifold that hangs lower than the later years, so there is no room to put a wrench and hex on the steering box. MB has "special tools" for this (basically "L" shaped tools) but I can't justify paying a fortune for a one-time only adjustment. Has anyone ever made this adjustment with a "home-made" remedy"?

could you not just heat and bend your own hex?
