1966 200D Generator/Alternator Swap?
Is it possible to replace the generator with an alternator?
Would it need a different regulator too? Has anyone here done it? Thanks. |

Pretty common upgrade. You need to add an "exciter" wire to the new alternator. Most of them have built in regulators. If not the Standard Brands model VR101 regulator can be added to control the voltage. I believe the Standard line also has the regulator in an electronic version.
There are some one wire units out there but I have no idea if they'd mount to your existing brackets.

I swapped out the generator for alternator. The 1992 Chevrolet six cylinder CS alternator is a same size bolt on unit. You will need to install the GM plug and wire it as noted by Mike D so it gets excited when you turn the ignition key. The alternator was inexpensive and eliminated the need for voltage regulator.

Thanks Mike and Jeffrey. I'm glad to hear that it can be done. I had an old Sportster that ran a generator and I didn't care for it either. I'm still doing the brakes and will change the old oil tomorrow. It looks like the old screw jack gave out so I got some new ramps.
