W123 Bulkhead (firewall) plastic & padding replacement
 

I have 1979 300TD W123. The bulkhead (firewall) plastic & foam padding has failed. Down under the drivers and front passenger forward campartment is the bulkhead (firewall) which is covered in a very brittle black plastic material covering a sticky foam material. Any one out there replace this with a new material? Is there replacement parts available? Any upgradeable materials used by anyone?

You can still buy it at the dealership but it does not come pre-formed to the curves of the car so it breaks and is difficult to fit. You'd have to heat it carefully in an oven or something and it would stink to high heaven...

...most people go for something like dynamat. That is very expensive. Others have gone for bitumastic roofing products - be aware that these products in a fire might produce a serious amount of smoke that could kill you!

The reason for the existing material coming away from the structure is likely to be because of rust. If this is the case - fix the rust first - don't be too worried about sound deadening insulation just yet
