SHIFT POINTS? 1971 250 / w114
hello, just picked up a 1971 250 automatic. manual says it is a 4 speed, when i come from a stop i count 4 gears, but 65 mph seems at high RPM's. shifting is roughly as follows
approx 1/5 throttle. shifts into second around 4MPH shifts into third around 20MPH shifts into fourth around 25-28MPH. anyone have same model that can give some input? or any input from knowledgeable Mercedes fanatics. Thanks, Donny |

This is normal. If you put the car in 2 it will stay in 1 a lot longer, and if you floor it. At 1/5 throttle it's going to shift absolutely as soon as it can. Earlier cars just start in 2nd. Then 6 cylinder engines in these cars are high-revving, and they are fine being driven that way. Don't think twice about cruising at 4000 - 5000 rpm. (I know, you don't have a dash tach).
Max RPM on engine is 6300, Max speed in 4th gear is 175 kph = 109 mph. You may want to invest in the Mercedes shop manual for the car, which by coincidence I happen to be selling cheap. It weighs 6 pounds, measures 12" x 8" x 2" and has about a million pages. $50 shipped Conus. Send me your email if interested. Pics attached. Scott |
