Yeah, I kinda agree with Ron keep it original. You would expect someone to have a 220S nowadays but less likely to see the simpler 220. It would be neat to see one. Plus, you have an Sb already.
I would want disc fronts though.

Seriously ? they put sheet metal screws right through the bright work ? .

What a pisser .

If anyone here loves old Mercedes Diesels , Pontons / Fintails , to - morrow (9/1/2015 will be your chance to buy several at scrap value : https://www.kenporterauctions.com/vehicle_listing_temp.asp?auctionid=367&searchval=Automobiles

They were nice when parked in the 1970's .

As far as your car : it's only original once .

If you're planning to drive it much , I'd highly suggest the disc brakes .

that piece of trim is either wrong one or mounted wrong, should not be that close to trunk seam, and of course the holes I might have a few of those trim pieces

Great thread. Good luck with it. Keep as original as possible. I believe cars used to stop ok with drum brakes.

The photo shows the front passenger side trim held on with metal screws. The plastic tabs could have been had for less than a dollar 30 years ago when the screws were used. The center garnish molding on the radiator grill is also screwed on. Luckily, I have spare bright pieces to replace them and correct clips to hold them on.

The windshield gasket and rear window gasket need replacement. I will address the damaged molding when installing the new gaskets. I have a shop that installed the gaskets on The Bullet in mind for the job. This is a job I won't attempt at home.

Cleaning up the Engine Bay

Mulch is good for flower beds because it retains moisture. For the same reason, mulch is not good for the engine compartment unless you want to grow rust. Various pieces of debris, pine needles and leaves are also potential fuels for an engine fire.

Dolly has been off the road for many years. I have been having a good look at the engine compartment which is overall very clean, but it did have a lot of debris under the brake master cylinder and across the firewall on the other side. The area where the hood hinges are recessed has drain holes that clog when debris and dirt collects and also under the wiper arm connections.

After using compressor to blow out dirt and shop vacuum engine compartment.

Angry

I hate those debris traps ~ all my W-123's have to be blown out on a regular basis , failure to do so causes serious rusting even in Loa Angeles .

reminds me of when I was talking off the fender of one of my parts cars, I found an old shop rag, embossed with Mercedes Benz on it . No doubt left there when on the assembly line. Wonder if the worker at the end of the day said
"I know I had a rag here somewhere"

Ya know Ron, I always figured you were a conversant kind of guy but I never suspected you were verbose enough to "talk a fender off".

Buried Treasure

Hello Peaches,

I installed the shift linkage bushings this morning. I wanted to jack up the car and have a look at the clutch slave to see what size wrench I will need to bleed the system. I found the tool pouch in the trunk that includes a tool I have not seen before that would have been immensely helpful.

The drain plug is a 14mm hex that has about an inch of clearance. I have used 14mm nut on 14mm bolt to have something I can grip when I changed oil on the Emerald Bullet. Today I discovered this Mercedes Benz tool in the pouch that has a 14mm hex with perhaps 3/4 inch total depth. I will treasure this next time I have to loosen the oil drain plug.

Does anyone know where a list of components for the tool pouch might be? How would I know if I am missing stuff?

Thank you!

Jeffrey

Here's a picture of my pouch. Maybe some cross contamination with the loose tools from my 115 pouch but nothing that is as valuable as that drain plug wrench. That's the one.

Post Special Tools

That's a nice one ! .

I still have my old VW special tools ,one looks like this but the hex is 17MM , for tranny oil servicing .

it's a simply thing to have your local Welder tack a 14MM (or whatever) nut onto a bit of flat or round stock ~ until you've used one you cannot imagine how useful one of these tools are .

Interestingly , special tools can often be found dirt cheap in flea markets , swap meets , pawn and thrift stores etc. being sold by folks who have no idea what they're for .

Most every time I go to my local auto jumble , I purchase cheap old Dealer/Factory tools I have wanted for 40 + years .
