1971 MB 300SEL 6.3
I'm looking to purchase a late year production 1971 Mercedes 300SEL 6.3.
See attached jpg of steering wheel. Is this correct for that model, that year? I used to seeing the older style black wheel, chrome horn ring and MB logo black pad in center. Thanks. |

I believe (although I am not an expert) that is not the correct steering wheel for a 1971 model year 108/109 sedan. I agree with you that the wheel should be the black wheel with chrome/silver horn ring and black horn pad. I believe the wheel pictured was used late in the 1973 model year. Send the picture to the Mercedes Classic Center: thomas.hanson@mbusa.com
Tom will know the answer for sure. |

That's not the original wheel. Orig is a thin, large wheel like you describe.
Wouldn't be hard to source another and switch back if it's bothering you. www.m-100.cc is the forum specific to these cars, though we like them too. |

As I remember the 69 and 70 models were faster. I think the 1971 had emission controls or something like that that impeded the performance a bit.

that is the wrong steering wheel, which makes one wonder what other modifications were made and for what reason
