New 450SEL 6.9 "Steiner" The Sheikhmobile

Well, the white 450SEL that I was going to drive has registration problems, so I decided to take the "ratty" 6.9 in our Museum and start driving it. With time, I might buy it. It's rust-free, stays up and it does not leak too much!

VIN#: 116-036-12-000900 (If Dr. Sternschnuppe is around...)

This is the car as soon as I got it from the Museum floor. It had been sitting for a year, so there's a few maintenance items it needs. I want this topic to be the car's "diary", and hopefully be of some help to many 6.9 owners out there. On to work!

The interior had been upholstered by a hack in Abu Dhabi. Carpet glued to carpet, collapsed seats, bad vinyl tint. I have a parts W116 280S with a black interior, so I am not overly worried.

And now, one of the most important things to do: getting all vacuum devices connected correctly. Does anybody know what this vacuum device is, and its function in the engine?

All the vacuum routing looks untidy and improvised. I want to get it to factory stock; does anybody have a vacuum diagram for the 6.9 M100?

Pretty please!

Very interesting car! I don't have experience with M100 engines. I have heard of a M100 group on the Internet. Perhaps you would find information there?

A charitable soul on Facebook has passed me the vacuum diagram for a US-spec 6.9... I guess if I remove the emissions equipment it should be enough. The little device I was so curious about is actually a thermo-valve, apparenty!

Grueling day yesterday! I started my morning looking at our parts W116 280S. The car has no papers and plenty of sun and rust damage, so it's not worth restoring. It is in our little Museum "junkyard", covered in dust. Not fun to pull parts off of it! A traditional scarf (ghutra) around my head and face, in the style of the Berbers of the desert, and down to the job

Back in our maintenance shop, I realized the rust damage on the tracks and replaced them with the ones from the old seats. Forgive the chisel in the picture, some rusted components needed a little bit of "swing press convincing".

The hammer with a long pick is not to be used for anything other than panel beating Miguel!

Indeed! I use the mace and chisel in the picture for "persuasion", and the flat side of the bodyman's hammer to get any warped metal back to its original shape. Luckily, I only had to do it once.

A 6.9 as a daily driver? Do you own a petroleum company and get free gasoline?

My friend's dad was a mechanic for Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart. He said 6.9s have enough torque to pull their own gas station behind them, which they need.

Good luck with the project. My 6.9 has been off the road for like 2 years now. I need motivation to get back to working on it.

Emirates! What else can I say?

Sad news for Steiner... the owner and I could not reach and agreement on the price. However, we are both happy due to the exercise and maintenance it has received during my —short— custodianship.

Now, get ready for a surprise in a new topic...
