The 280 has less wood trim and of a lesser grade, and lacks exterior bright work around the window frames.

Tony is correct about the rear doors. The SEL is approximately four inches longer...
The trim is different but would fit the chassis. It would be a downgrade.

Quick question for the buyer: How was the weld job as the PO indicted he spliced two cars and from the sounds of it, it was pretty intense ...

IN ALL HONESTY, IT WAS NOT A VERY BAD JOB, THE ONLY PROBLEM WE NOTICED, ABOUT 1/2 " OF THE CUT WAS LAP WELDED INSTEAD OF BUTT WELDED AT THE INNER ROCKERS BUT WE ARE GOING TO REPLACE INNER ROCKERS AND OUTER ANYWAY, THE CAR IS REALLY RUSTY, OUR PLANS ARE TO REPLACE ALLL FLOORS , TRUNK FLOOR, DOORS, ETC. THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE BAY IS THE ONLY CLEAN METAL, IF IT WAS NOT FOR THAT WE WOULD STRAP IT, TRYING TO GET A COST ON THE METAL NOW. AFTER ALL SAID AND DONE WE ARE NOT TRYING TO RESTORE TO A SHOW CAR BUT A DRIVER, AS WE GO ALONG WE WILL POST THE JOURNEY. LOTS OF WORK AHEAD HOPEFULLY WE DONT TIRE OUT.

Since you are building a driver what about the possibility of buying a clean 300 SEL 4.5 and transplanting your drivetrain and whatever else would make it a nice car? The cost of the car and delivery would be less than the work you mentioned and probably a better end result. You will be painting anyway so paint it whatever you want.

I think the tunnel is unique to the 6.3, plus a few other issues. Not sure 100%. I just got interested in the 6.3, and then whimped out. I'm sure others will chime in on this.

we have considered adding all important parts to a 300 SEL 4.5 there is 1 on ebay right now that i have discuss with the owner, but the car is a titled car and is a 2 owner car , the 1st owner only kept it for 6 years, and the previous owner who kept the car for years was a highly ranked navy officer who stripped the car to be restored because of being away so much just did not have the time to finish the car, but it is a Germany delivered high compression, and the color was very rare, came with rear heated back window, so my thoughts are to try and save the car and keep as much originality to the car as i can, by replacing the rockers and all the floors other than where the roof cut there will be no visible sign the car was cut.

Quote:
A lap joint is preferable to a butt weld, it is near impossible to get a butt weld gap consistent all the way around a joint. And, most of a car has lap joints / spot welds when new. |
