M130 / M180 Engine Swap?

Anyone know if a M130 engine 2.8L, serial # 13092012010720, would bolt up to a 1967 W110 M180 2.3L Fintail 4 speed manual gearbox?

If not a direct bolt on, what would I need to do to get them to work together?

I did that swap. You need the flywheel that came with the M130 because it is balanced with the crank shaft.

Note the highlight in the engine #. If the original autobox flywheel is still with the engine, the balance/imbalance condition can be transferred to a manual flywheel, and a pilot bearing installed in the crankshaft.

Frank, what does the highlighted "12" in the VIN signify? Can you offer any details about the engine (year, hp, CR)?

Yes, the 2.8L auto flexplate is available with the engine. From my experience with other auto manufacturers engines, the auto flex plate is little more than a flat piece of metal with a ring gear. Is this different with the MB flex plate?

Please explain more the " transfer of the balance" from the M130 flex plate to the M180 flywheel.

The "12" indicates that the engine was built for an auto-trans application, LHD. ("10" for manual, LHD)

For those engines the flywheel and the flexplate are separate pieces. Although the flywheel is much lighter than that for a manual trans it participates in the external balancing of the crankshaft. It will usually be found to be non-neutral in balance, and consequently it is indexed to the crankshaft. If an indexing mark cannot be found, one should be created to ensure the relationship is maintained. The replacement flywheel can then be imbalanced to match the original.
