w108 steering box removal

Hi,
My steering box leaks like a sieve. Is it possible to remove it (to change the seals) without removing the engine? It sure looks tight in there.
Thanks,

I have the same issue with Dolly, my W111 sedan. I removed the steering box on my other W111 sedan to install a new steering bushing about five years ago so the details are a bit fuzzy.

Check the driver's side wheel well for three bolts going into the engine compartment. Those three bolts hold the steering box on the W111 chassis cars. The 4.5 liter V8 engine takes up more space in the engine bay than a straight six cylinder engine.

Someone with a work shop manual may be able to look up the procedure for removing the steering box for you.

Looking forwarding to details on your successful repair. Post some pictures... You know we love pictures!

I'll look at it again. There is no way for it to come out upward, the engine is in the way.

Is the engine in the way or is it "Just" the exhaust manifold? 2 bolts on the downpipe that will likely break, and 8 studs on the head that you'll lose half of as well. You'll need to weigh if you want to risk removing it

It may be possible to unbolt the steering box so that it can be turned sideways. Is there enough room to work on the steering box in the engine compartment? I don't currently have a W108 to look at for comparison...

I don't think I could get it out even if the manifold was off. Also, taking the manifold off may not be possible, as it needs to slide off the studs, and there is not enough room betweem the body and the manifold to slide it off. If the studs could be removed with the manifold in situ then it could be done, but that is a big if.

Not really, no access at all from the top.

Thanks,

I took the manifold off without removing the engine. The studs came off with the nuts that were rust-welded to them, or broke at/near the head.

Don,t mean to hijack this thread, but does the W108 and W110 / 111 use the same power steering boxes? I am thinking of converting my manual box to power.
