Question 77 450 slc

I am on the verge of purchasing a 77 450slc with 99000 miles on her.She is in beautiful condition.$7500 cnd is the asking price.... Is this a good year? and are there any serious problems that it may incur?also would this be a good everyday driver?
Thanx in advance

Off hand, sounds like a good price. If you drive it in the winter, it'll fall prey to corrosion -- on that note, make sure there is no structural corrosion/rot and no bondo -- esp. in the wheel arches.

Also, some of the older models had the catalytic convertor up front near the motor, which was an issue. I think that was pre '75 (?) A/C not the greatest either...

Most important thing is to have a complete set of records, the more the better.

There are more knowldegeable SLC folks on the forum, but I was briefly looking into SLC and learned a bit. Overall a solid and reliable car.

This is what I have observed on the board:

Rust is very bad news on these cars.

You need to make sure that the heat and AC blow hot and cold, respectively, and that air flows to the dash vents and to the floor and to the windshield depending on the setting. Make sure the system changes from cool to heat as you move the thumbwheel.

Check or get someone to check for flat cam lobes and excessive valve train wear, and for timing chain stretch.

Good luck -

Yes, I believe in 1976 the catylitc converter was moved to the typical location on the tail pipe, and also received a much improved fuel injection system.

I also believe the typical cam lobe wear is on the right cam.

That price is high for an SLC (that's over 5,000US$). If it's immaculate and with a dealership warrentee, it's OK.

To get an idea of price, look around on the web for used examples and compare the price & description.

For some reason, these cars just haven't held any value. Be sure the price you pay is for as rust free a car as possible.
