69 280s problems

ok, ive got a problem with this car that has me confused.
if you are driving up a hill and turn with less than 3/4 of a tank of gas it will stall, it feels like it is running out of gas. if you straighten the wheel out it will usually be ok. this is the wierd part if it does die, it will start right up like nothing happened.
on flat ground it runs perfectly (it will start warm on a tap of the key). any ideas?? thanks in advance

could be that the fuel is struggling to get from the tank uphill to the motor....

I'd review proper operation of the fuel pump, fuel filter, etc.

If it's not fuel related, perhaps the tranny is slipping thereby making it feel like it starved for fuel....

>once re-started, how does it proceed up the hill? OK? or still struggles?

hope this helps

you can hear the engine, miss and then it will die. it will then restart and run fine unless you hit a steeper part of the hill.
the key is the hill, on flat ground i can run the tank until its almost empty, but in the hills i have to keep it 3/4 full or more

..'69 280S- I believe had the twin carbs..no?

we were original owners of a workhorse '67 250S that required carbs rebuilt at some point in its life- - -

this perhaps is another area requiring skilled review

key is to source cause of this condition eliminating the major areas one at a time if its not readily apparant: air/fuel starvation, drivetrain issue, elec. etc. (shouldn't be too difficult to a trained tech)

I would suspect fuel starvation. Check all filters, including the tank strainer, and the small one on the fuel pump, and the ones in the carb inlets. If the problem persists, check the fuel pump for good delivery pressure.

thanks guys, i was wondering if they had a strainer in the tank. i didnt want to go pulling the carbs apart unless i have a reason. someone has rebuilt them before, and they actually work well.
i'll chack that stuff and post back my findings

Don't screw with those Zeniths until you've exhausted everything else. They are very fine carbs regardless of what people who have no clue say about them. I would suggest removing the trunk mat and pulling the fuel sending unit. With it removed you can look direvtly into the tank through a big hole. then go from there.

Good luck,
Peter

stumbling 280

Always check the cheep, dumb stuff first!!
fuel strainers, in the pump. filters. then fuel pressure at running speed..and at load..
my guess is fuel starvation.
flex line leaving the tank.

I had a similar problem with a 280-SL. It turned out that there was a build up of sludge in the gas tank and under a pull up hill the sludge would be picked up in the screen filter in the gas tank and shut the flow of fuel off to the engine.

I would drain the tank and see if you have a similar problem before tearing everything down.
