300sel 3.5 PAS....... Squeaky pump.

Hi.
Squeaky steering pump.
How do I go about changing?
With least mess and is there a way of bleeding system afterwards?

Are bearings an easy swap job? Part numbers?
Thanks guys. K

Hard to say as the sound might not be as you discribe it is .
But first you could try a pas fluid change, and filter replacment.
Thats if you have not done so yet.
But i think this is covered in the - HOW TO ARTICLES - at the top of the page .
You will need to find your car in the information provided click on it and read .I dont think many users know about this It is there under General , down the page .All pass is the same idea to chenge the pas oil , .Shame its all very helpfull.

Had a good look but can't find my model/pump.
But got a fairly good idea now.
Only how do I know if its bearings or filter/fluid noise.
Fluid looks fairly clean.

You can remove the serpentine belt .Any play or roughness will be evident as you turn the pully . Biut first do a drain and filter change first. But bleed the system as post before .As you have the belt off , remove the pump and rebuild it You shoild get a rebuild kit from Ebay or MB dealers

Had a look this afternoon.
Fluid was worse than I thought.
Very dark.
Sucked out reservoir.
Got filter out.
It was made of a cork material and black.
Looks like something from the 70's.
Pump sounded and felt smooth with belts off.
What a game loosening the pump! Lol.

Right if you need more info look on youtube a few good videos to put you in the right direction. If it was oil was blackish then its time for a change . You could fix a drill to the pully to drive it ,then you would see and hear if its the pump .Make sure its going in the right direction first and not on a fast speed . Go and check all the pullys now you have the belt off incase its one of them making the noise .

Squeak or a groan? Squeaking is usually loose belts. The loud groan comes from fluid not entering the pump fast enough, so it sucks in air. The bad filter, or a low fluid level can cause this. Fluid is supposed to be on the nub in the reservoir but I always found that to be too low to prevent the groan, and had it a little higher.
