Year of car (sorry if I should know from the photo)? Brand of seal used? By yourself or with a friend? Any rust under the old one? Etc.

1975 280 SLC.
2 people to fit the new glass. Used the rubber that was actually still OK. Quite a lot of rust under the rubber meaning we had to cut out and replace some sections of the flange. The flange as original is not very smooth and I reckon from day one you will get water between the rubber and the metal. This time fitting we coated it with sealer to at least give it a fighting chance. I'll find some photos and post them. The car is a total rebuild, back to bare metal and start again job. The first thing noticed was the firewall falling apart. That started it a year ago and I thought it would be a months work.😨😨😨😨. |

Just a tip to anyone with an SLC/SL.
Stick your head under the fender each side and you will see a plate fixed to the inner side and with a rubber seal between it and the fender. If it shows any signs of rust or breakdown of the underseal fix it now. Any spaces allow dirt and water through and they build up causing rot where the inner rocker panel, firewall, outer rocker panel and the space behind the fuse box all come together. |

Thanks for those details. I need to change out the rubber for my slightly older w115, but I suspect the overall design is similar. I have owned the seal for a while now, but haven't found the time to start. In other words, I am intimidated by the whole thing. Thanks for the advice and pics.

Just an update.
The final way mine was fitted is by fitting the chrome to the rubber then the rubber to the glass then use a cord to pull the inside lip of the rubber into the inside of the flange. At times the bottom trim popped out at one end and it's very difficult to get in back in when the rubber is on the glass. On the SLC the chrome has a J shape that has to locate in the rubber. |

Where it all started. Tried to load a few photos but somehow cant do. Seems I loaded the photo before so now cant load here.
Check thread on oil bracket top connection. Shows the rust damage to the firewall area. |
