Higher Output Alternators
Those early ones use a seperate voltage regulator and should be discarded for the 65 ampere ones used on the 1985 W1230's and later model W126's ~ they're bolt in and only require slight wiring modifications .
About the voltage : if you use the BOSCH branded voltage regulator / brush holder, you'll get 14.7 volts DC anytime the system needs it . All the off branded voltage regulators prefer to charge below 14 volts as mentioned . BOSCH branded rebuilt units are -always- equipped with the better regulator, no need to pay more, just shop carefully . I source 65 ampere alternators off junkyard cars and replace the regulator and cheapo stamped steel pulley, good to go ~ I run halogen headlights, AC almost constantly and of course, the radio and never had any dim lights problems nor low charge batteries . The GM Delcotron SI alternator is nice too and cheap at any F.L.A.P.S. across America if/when you travel but needs brackets modified . A good thread here, take some time to consider and choose carefully .
