I have a broken spring in my parking brake mechanism

1976 280C W114. How do I get in there? The wheel hub is in the way. Do I have to remove wheel hub? There is one single 13mm nut in the center with a huge washer, is this the route I must follow?

The wheel hub stays in place, it has to be worked around and through. By through meaning that the hold down springs can be removed by using a straight blade screwdriver (there is a special tool) going through a wheel stud hole in the hub.

Going through a wheel stud hole with a screwdriver is how they get adjusted by rotating the star/adjuster. I like to snug the adjuster just until the wheel stops rotating and then back off the star 3-4 teeth.

Only do one side at a time so that you have a reference and not to swap the adjuster from one side to the other accidentally.

The nut in the middle is a bolt that retains the axle. Actually removing and reinstalling the hub is a difficult and technical procedure.

Good luck!!!
