exhaust and distributor

(1973) 450sl exhaust is loud. While tinkering the other day I removed the advance hose and the car ran much quieter, go figure I need help. Is the distributor bad or is it the exhaust system. HELPP!!!!!!!

Did you loose any semblance of pickup and performance when you pulled the hose ? (Oh, and did you plug the hose?)

Is your 350SL a US or euro model? The US model is an M117. The euro model is an M116.

I musta been real tired when I read your email this morning. I rounded down the model #.

I was thinking along the line that by pulling the line you were not just loosing advance, but that you weren't pushing the engine very hard and getting the RPMs up as high as before. Because you didn't plug the hose, the resulting vacuum leak can impact performance of the fuel system and the transmission shift pattern.

In other words, the change in sound may be due to a change in engine behavior not approaching what it did previously. In other words, if the car is too noisy for you, check the muffler & pipes.
