Engine temp. problem on 1972 250

I drove my 1972 250 today. It was quite hot outside. The temp guage went all the way to the 250 mark a though times. When I shut off the car it went pasted the 250 mark. Is there a problem with the teletermomet? In 1999 the owner that I bought it from had the same problem with it going past the 250 mark. So they replaced the thermostat, viscos and fan clutch and thermometer. Is there something that I should check out?

Thanks for your help,

This sounds alot like what happened to my car. I still haven't quite figured it out.

Hopefully the head gasket isn't toast. So you really shouldn't drive it only you can take it to a shop to be diagnosed if possible.

Is the auxillary fan kicking in ? It should after the car goes over 212. According to other owners it should stay on if the car is overheating even if you turn the engine off.

What temperature does it normally run at?

I was thinking maybe it could be the water pump? Thermostat maybe? My car doesn't have a aux. fan. My car runs about 175 to 180. I'm going to try and take it in today and have them check it out. I will let you know what happens.
