W108 Steering Jacket
To make a long (embarrassing) story short, I dropped the speedo cable collar down a hole into the steering jacket tube (8) on my ‘69 280S. It’s a hollow unused tube on my car (I have a floor mounted stick; the tube is for column shift stuff). I have had no luck getting the lost part out of the tube. The second photo shows the firewall end of the tube and it looks like it might be a plug but I can’t tell. Does anyone know? If it is, can I remove it (without breaking it preferably)? If I loosen the clamping sleeve (42) what will happen? I am loathe to just loosen it without knowing what will happen. Thanks!

Have you tried to grab and pull the cable out using one of these yet?

I have one of those somewhere but I am about to break down and buy a new one because I can’t find mine anywhere!

I finally got it out with a stiffer wire. (I still haven’t found my grabber gizmo). I spent hours looking for this collar before I realized it fell into this fairly small hole in the steering jacket. I stuck my finger in the hole and managed to knock the collar down to the bottom of the tube. Just about drove me nuts. Thanks for the suggestion!
